U.S. PROPAGANDA.
GOVERNMENT CRITICISED.
"People Don't Get the News."
WASHINGTON, Nov. 26.-Repre
sentative John Taber (Republican.
New York), who is chairman-desig
nate of the House Appropriations
Committee, said yesterday that all
Federal - information programmes
must be thoroughly cleaned out in
the name of American liberty and
freedom of the Press. He said that
since the New Deal the Government
had been "dishing out expensive
propaganda" in such enormous
quantity that nobody could count
the number of Press releases.
"The result is that people don't_
get the news," he went on. "They
are deceived by propaganda, and the
Press corps becomes lazy. Reporters
want a 'hand-out' on anything they
put in the papers."
Propaganda staffs never told the
truth if they could help it. Mr.
Taber said. So-called public rela
tions staffs were designed to cover,
up departmental iniquities. He
claimed that 100,000.000' dollars
(£A30.591,600) could be saved by
eliminating propaganda agencies.
