NOTES AND COMMENTS
LINKING UP CLOSER.
Broken Hill is slowly but surely
being linked up more closely with the
three nearest capitals. It now has
connection by air with Melbourne and
Sydney, and the direct railway line
to the State capital is creeping nearer
every day. Not to be outdone,. South
Australia has effected direct telephone
communication, and.an aerial passen-
ger and mail service is promised, to
be ready about April. Sydney and
Adelaide will before long be within
easier traveling distance by rail and
air respectively, and those who are
willing to travel hy air and can afford
to pay the price will save a lot of
time now spent in less rapid modes
of transport.
. . .
IRRIGATED LAND BLOCKS.
The same old story of State social-
ism is being repeated in South Austra
lia, . where a Royal Commission has j
beep investigating irrigation settle-
ments. Its report is a scathing in- ]
dictment of Government business man- j
agement which is likely to result in
A loss of:; nearly £1,000,000.. It is
stated that half the loss may be saved
if the settlers are given 60 years in-
stead of. the present 40 to repay" the
money advanced to them. ' That means
a reduction in the .present holders
annual payments, thus leaving more
for the holders to live on, and im-
mediately raising their standard of
comfort.
