QUEEN BACCHA WINS SPRINT
AFTER MANY FAILURES
The Watcher's First Hurdle.
By GAMBIER
RENOWN justified the opinion formed of him when he
ran on unlucky third at Morphettville a week pre-
viously and, finishing with a well-sustained run, he
defeated Telemeter and Monvale in the James Hall
Renown, well ridden by W. Cox,
was responsible for a pleasing trial
for the Port Adelaide Cup, which
will now be run at Morphettville on
December 29. He was weighted for
the long handicap at 7.8. and Mr.
G. C. Goudie has decided not to re-
handicap Mr. W. P. A. Lapthornes,
four-year-old gelding. Therefere
he will go into the Port Cup with
5 lb. less than he carried, and as
most of the 10 Port Cup first ac-
ceptors. whom he met on Saturday,
will have only a few pounds less
than at the week-end. Renown
should defeat them again in the
Cup. However, he will encounter
fresh opposition in Waxwings.
Veiled Promise, and Son of Aurous
Soon after the start Telemeter drew
clear, and nearest of the others were
the stablemates. Bold Scot, Jiggle and
Renown. Telemeter increased her lead
to four lengths and she was still well
clear of Jiggle. Bold Scot and Renown
entering the straight. Telemeter battled
on gamely, but Renown gradually wore
her down, and heading her half a fur-
long from home, won by more than a
length from the grey mare from the
Far North. Then came the unlucky
Monvale, who, in his five previous out-
ings. had run second.
Nevermore, who made up a lot of lee-
way in the straight, did best of the un-
placed horses, but Black Diamond was
never really dangerous. Denny Shingle,
who met with surprisingly strong sup-
port, made dash at the leaders after
entering the straight, but could not sus-
tain the effort. Jiggle again disappoin-
ted, and Bold Scot began to give ground
before the home turn was reached.
It was a keen betting race, and when
business settled down 6/1 was on offer
against the field. Then there was a rush
to back Denny Shingle, whose quotation
was quickly reduced from 12/1 to 6/1
and 7/1 bar one was on offer. Eventu-
ally Bold Scot became favorite at 5/1.
Queen Boccho In Form
After many failures since she was
placed In work a few months ego after
a spell which followed her autumn trip
to Melbourne, where she won the Hawks-
burn Handicap. Queen Baccha showed
a return to form by defeating Wool-
combe and Hero in the Knoxville Han-
dicap.
This Baccha Sakao, trained by
B. C. Raven, had shown improvement by
King Jolly at Victoria Park a fortnight
previously, and she would have been
more popular than she was for Satur-
day's sprint had she not drawn No. 16
at the barrier. However, she overcame
this disadvantage, and cutting down the
leader, Valesca. a furlong from home she
lasted long enough to win by a head
from the fast finishing Woolcombe. who
was conceding her 20 lb.
Woolcombe was responsible for a
really good race, as he hung out and
was forced to make the home turn
rather wide out, and thus had to cover
some extra ground. He has enhanced
his already good prospects for the Christ-
;
mas Handicap, in which he, with 8.5
will meet Queen Baccha (last year's win-
ner) on 9 lb. better terms. That dif-
ference in weight should enable Wool-
come to turn the tables on the mare in
the Port Club's sprint, which will be
on Saturday week. Woolcombe should
again finish in front of Hero, who ran
third, as he will meet the Virgin Gold
colt 6 lb. better. On Saturday's running,
none of the unplaced horses would ap-
pear to have much chance of defeating
Woolcombe in the Christmas sprint.
The Watcher's First Hurdle Win
The Watcher, who has shown promise
a fortnight previously by finishing a
close second to Boy Prince won the
Kingswood Hurdle in good style from
Dentree and the oulsider Tipperary. The
Watcher, who was equal favorite with
Bay Prince and Dentree, settled down
among the leaders after jumping the first
two hurdles rather awkwardly. Insu-
lite fell near the six furlongs post, and
interfered with Boy Prince. The
Watcher overtook Lindana in the straight
and, holding the lead, won by a couple
of lengths from Dentree. who had lost
with lining out of the straight. Lin-
dana pulled up lame.
G. Pattison told the stewards that
when Insulite fell Boy Prince jumped
over him and, stumbling, lost many
lengths. :
G. Air handled The Watcher satisfac-
torily. The winner is a six-year-old
gelding by Great star from Glass Stick,
by Wallace Isinglass from Tar Stick. He
was bred at Millicent by Mr. M. S. Mc-
Donald, and was purchased as a year-
ling at the Adelaide sales for 160 gns
by Mr. H. Smith, of Kudgee Station, in
the Broken Hill district. The only pre-
vious wins by The Watcher, who is now
trained by C. A. Northway. a good man
with Jumpers, were in a Novice and a
Trial Stakes in the country, but his per-
formance on Saturday suggested that he
will win more races over Jumps.
Dormela Defeats Moderates
There was a field of 20 in the Mon-
reith Trial, which provided an exciting
finish in which Dormela scored by half
a head from By Goom with King Syce
only a head away third. King Syce tried
to lead all the way. but Dormela (D. An-
drews), who was seventh into the
taking King Syce shortly before the judge
was reached, held off By Goom, who was
carried out wide when making his run
in the straight, but showed much im-
provement on his previous performance.
The stewards reported that W. Stir-
line (King Syce), lost his irons near the
winning post. This, no doubt, affected
his final effort.
Dormela a three-year-old gelding by
Koomela from Dorcas, by Chivalrous
from the Devizes mare Mopsa, had not
previouslv won a race. As a two-year-
old he ran unplaced four times. Last
August Mr. J. Martin, who won several
races with Salmar. obtained a lease of
him from Mr. C. Schlink, of Tumby Bay,
who bought him as a yearling for 70
guineas. Mr. Martin has since trained
him on B. Matson's private track at
Semaphore.
