FREfc STATE BUDGET
¡EXCESS OF EOENTiiTtJfiE .
f ^ ESTIMATED FpR, THE TEAR
A Renter's message from London,
dafed April 14, states that the first
Free State Budget introduced bj Mr.
W. T. Cosgrave,, President, in- the Deil
Eireann shows .no alteration in .taxa-
tion. The imfort' duties remain, but
Empire preference will be invefttigated.
The revenue for- the year ended March
31 totalled £»,000,000, hut the Ex-
chequer is»ue«_ i qr, the ^maintenance of
the public services, although' not
necessarily all -expended,, amounted to
£2j333,000 more, which, together with
(£197,000 on hand, was borrowed' on
revenue. The total is subject to modi-
fication, owing to Anglodrish financial
adjustmenta, but the balance threatens
' to be substantially against ^'the Free
: State. The estimated revenue for tho
forthcoming year is £26,,&m0Ö0, and
the expenditure £46,500,000. Extensive
borrowing is therefore necessary. Th©
President concluded on an optimktio
. note, and hoped that the revenue will
cover ell the commitments as the coun-
try settles down and the - anti-Free
I Staters become exhausted. "Mr. Cos
j grave bewailed the .widespread'non
I payment of the income, tax.; .Over
(£300,000 was due in Dublin alone from
persons capable of .paying. The Gov-
ernment proposed, to aik .employers to
deduct the tax from employees' wages.
