"RUSSIAN WEATlER.
WINTER DRIVES LIKED.
"250 Red Divisions Poised."
LONDON, Jan 15.-"The Times"
in a leader on the Russian assault
says: "Disappointment may be felt
that the grand assault from the east
so long awaited ia not likely to
coincide In time with an equally
vigorous offensive from the western
front. So much has been achieved
for the enemy by Field Marshal von
RzmdstedtS daring irruption on the
Ardeanes.
"It is estimated that 10 weeks of
winter campaigning weather lie
ahead of the Russians. It is time
enough to deal mighty blows to the
enemy in the east but scarcely
enough after the recent dislocation
for the renewed preparations neces
sary before an offensive against the
Rhine defences can be launched.
'The new Russian offensive aims
at the vitals of the enemy by the
most direct route from the east. The
point of impact was plainly fore
shadowed for many months. Marshal
Koniev has held Sandomierz (south
ern Poland) since last August. There
has now been time for one of those
courses of long and thorough pre
paration which previously had been
repeatedly justified by subsequent
sweeping gains.
"According to enemy estimates, at
least 250 Red Army divisions are
ready for action on the eastern front.
The situation holds unlimited possi
bilities. Previous winter campaigns
of the Russians have taught their
friends to pitch their expectations
hig-."
