ALLIED OFFENSIVE.
STRAIN ON NAZIS.
Casualties Estimate.
WASHINGTON, Dec 14.-The
Secretary of War (Mr Stimson) told
a Press conference today that the
Allied armies on the western front
are now in a position to jump off
upon the most important German
Industrial regions, but he warned
that gains should be assessed cau
tiously.
Summing up the results of the
general offensive begun in Novem
ber, Mr Stimson said: "It has placed
Germany under a terrific strain. It
has been estimated that German
casualties between November 8 and
November 30 were approximately
152,000--roughly 7,000 daily, killed,,
seriously wounded or taken prisoner.
"Doubtless the figure is smaller
now. Nevertheless, it is obvious that
a considerable number of German
divisions have been badly mauled.
We have partly breached the Sieg
fried Line towards the Ruhr valley,
but we, too, have sustained many
casualties."
