SCHOOL VACATION.
CARE OF CITY CHILDREN.
Scheme for Munition Workers.
Inquiries , have been received by
the Manpower Directorate concern
ing the renewal this year of an
arrangement made last year by which
the children of mothers engaged in
munitions-maklig were able to go to
the country during the Christmas
school vacation. The Deputy Direc
tor-General of Manpower (Mr H. T.
Stitfold) said yesterday that many
mothers of children were employed
in various undertakings which came
under the head of essential produc
tion, and these were able to make
satisfactory arrangements for their
children during normal working days.
The Christmas school vacation, bc :
ever, was different, and if the chil
dren were to be cared for their
mothers would have to leave their
work and return to their homes for
the holidays. This would mean a
serious loss In factory output. It
was to avoid this loss that the
scheme was instituted last year when
offers were invited from farmers and
others in country areas who were
willing to care for the children.
"Arrangements will be made only
in the case of those children whose
presence at home during the holiday
period would necessitate the mother's
absence from work," said Mr Stit
fold- "The Manpower Directorate
will receive applications from such
mothers, which must be verified by
the management of the factory con
cerned, and invites offers from farms
and country homes suitably placed to
take the children. Such offers should
express the number of children who
can be accommodated; if restrictions
on ages and sex are desired, these
should be mentioned. If the religious
denomination of the family is given
children of a similar faith can be
allotted. The department will then
place the mother in touch with the
prospective host and leave them to
complete arrangements. The scheme
was very successful last year."
