Dock
Dispute
May Extend
MELBOURNE, Jan. 8.
Despite an announce-
ment today by the Federal
Minister for Labor (Mr.
Hollow-ay that Mr. Concilia-
tion Commissioner ?J. M.
Calvin would intervene in
the snip painters and dockers
strike early next week, there is
little likelihood of an imme
diate settlement, and- the dis
pute may extend to New South
Wales.
Seven hundred members of the
Federated Ship Painters and
Dockers' Union will go on strike
in Melbourne tomorrow night.
Only ship painters and
dockers who. are employed by
the day will strike. Permanent
employes working for the Mel
bourne Harbor Trust and
several other minor ship repair
ing flrms will e-ontlnue to work,
the ship" painters and dockers
The men are. an in
creased hourly rate of nay.

Tonight. 250 members of the
Ship Painters and Dodnts'
Onion employed by the Union
Steamship Company decided to
strike from tomorrow if their
claims are not met.
The Sydney executive of the
union will also meet tomorrow
to discuss a move to extend tbe
dispute to all local shipyards
Newcastle ship painters and
dockers, with the exception of
those employed at the State
Dockyard, decided today not to
work after tomorrow under the
existing rates of nay.
Tbe State Dockyard is not in
volved because workers there
bave been receiving extra rates
since tbe State 40-hour was in
bndncetl on July 1.
Mr. T.. Gordon. Federal and
Sydney branch secretary of the
onion, "reported.the matter in
dispute to tbe" local Registrar of
the Federal Arbitration - Court
(Mr. J. Welbouxn) today. Later
Mr. Welbourn referred the mat
ter to Mr. Galvin.
Mr. Gordon declared tonight
that tbe union was being vic
tUnised. It appealed: to have
been singled out because its
members were casual workers.
