Six Worst
Tokio Guards
To Die

TOKIO. January 6.
Known to the 250 Austra-
lians who survived the brutal
treatment at Tokio POW
Camp 4B as Gummy. Fishface.
Hoppy, Boofhead. Whisky and
Horsey, the six worst prison
guards were today sentenced to
death tor their part in the mur
der of 50 Australians during the
winter of 1943-44.
A seventh guard, Osma, was
' sentenced to 46 years' imprison
ment with hard labor.

16 other Japanese was told in

' Court here today. Among the 16
were AdmL Tahara Susumu,
Matsukawa Chuzo (Heavy
Harry), and Tajima Tanaki
Friendly Fred and later Hateful
Harry 1-
AdmL Susumu and bis asso
ciates were charged witb war
crimes committed in a POW
camp on Hainan Island between
November. 1942. and August,
1945.
Today's proceedings were
taken up by the prosecution's
accounts of the sufferings and
torture meted out to prisoners
and the terrible conditions in
the camp, where 81 Australians
died out of a total of 126. There
were also 70 Dutch casualties.
