ADELAIDE BOARD OF ADVICE.
AfnvnAV. .Tttve 9
Present— Messrs. J. L. Bonyfchon, J.P.
(Chaiiman), J. Dungey, V. Lawrance, A.
Adamson, T, Scherk, J. Anderson, Hon. W.
Sandover, and the Sunerintendent (Mr,
v ockins).
The Inspector-General of Schools for
warded the following report, dated June 2 : —
'I have the honour to inform you that in
company with Archdeacon Russell and the
Rev. M. O'Sullivan I have visited the
Catholic schools in the city and examined
the roll-books. It is of course not to be
wondered at that in some cases the mode of
keeping these books may be improved, but
the gentlemen referred to have erpressed
their willingness to see that the schools con
form to any directions which may be given
on the subject: they also desire that the
visitors should regularly look up the
absentees. I consider that the department
is much indebted to the conductors of these
schools for their readiness to meet all reason
able requirements, and that under these cir
cumstances there is no cause whatever for
casting any reflections on the Catholic
schools-las being harbours of refuse for children
who wish to evade the compulsory clause.'
Mr. Adamson remarked that the Board
might visit the Catholic schools. Mr.
Eonythos concurred. On the suggestion of
the Chairman a motion was passed to the
effect that the Board viewed with gratifica
tion the favourable report on the condition
of the Catholic schools, and that the Board
would take an early opportunity, with the
approval of the Roman Catholic authorities,
to visit the Catholic schools in Adelaide. It
*as moved by the Hon. W. Satoover
ihat cases having been brought before the
?Board where notices of truancy had not
reached parents, it is the opinion of the Board
v it ?ould be advisable that such notice
should be sent through the post by means of
postal cards.' This was seconded and
earned, It was also resolved-' That this
Board would be gratified by the Minister of
Education reappointing the Hon. D. Murray
as a member ot the Board. There were eight
applications [or free education, representing
twenty-one children. The Board adjourned
j or a, month.
