SUSPENSION OF THE ORIENTAL
BANK.
THE EFFECT IN SYDNEY.
fBv Teleeranh.1
Sydney, May 5,
The suspension of the Oriental Bank was
the sole topic of conversation in town to-day.
There was no excitement, however, on
'Chance. The suspension has not affected
the value of any of the other Bank shares.
Business at the various Banks was of the
usual character, showing that the public felt
no uneasiness as to their safety. Anything
like a panic in commercial circles or a depre
ciation in Bank stock was therefore out of
the question. So far as can be ascertained
no large mercantile houses are seriously
affected, nor has there been the slightest
indication of a mn on any of the
Sydney Bants. This morning a notice was
posted on the door of the head office in
Pitt-street, stating that under directions
from England the Oriental Bank would be
closed until further notice. Similar notices
were posted on the various branches of the
Bank throughout the colony. People are
naturally on their guard against taking the
paper money of the Bank, and it is under
stood that the heads of all the Government
departments advised all their officials
throughout the colony against taking
Oriental notes. Besides its office in Sydney
the Bank has branches at Araluen, Braid
wood, Bungendore, Burrowa, Goulbarn,
Grenfell, Murruraburrah, and Young.
