POLICEWOMEN.
A NEW SCHEME IN VICTORIA.
Melbourne, November 12.
The Chief Secretary (Mr. Tunnecliffe)
has completed regulations for giving
policewomen the full constabulary powers
of policemen.
Under those amended regulations, vhich
must be confirmed by the Executive
Council before bei-oming law, the police
women will enjoy the same power to ar
rest and will have the fame wages, hour::,
conditions, pension rights, and right to
wear uniforms if their superior officers
deem it noeessary, as policeman. Police-1
women may on special occasions c^rrr j
batons or revolvers, and be trained in I
the use of them, but arms would only j
be used by policewomen in extreme cir- '
rumstances. Usually, as at present,
their chief weapons will be vigilance, tact,
and sympathy.
Mr. TunDecliffc said to-day that it had
been his hope to establish a corps ->f
policewomen on a permanent footing. The
nolicewomen. if he could carry out his
plans, would have a distinctive uniform
and have their own women officers and
sub-officers. His idea was t~? select one
capable woman officer to organi.se her own
force. !
