A RARE PERFORMANCE
RECORDS ON STANDARD MACHINES
So frequently are Brooklands records
broken that sufficient importance is not
always attached to the performances. The
public is apt to take little note of the
high speeds attained because the records
arc often obtained by special racing
machines. Norton Motors, however, arc
proud of the fact that their successes are
gained ?n standard machines.
A representative of the A.C.U. was in
vited to the works of tbat firm, and selected
from stock the necessary parts to con
struct an absolutely standard overhead
valve 500 c.c. machine. The parts were
erected under his supervision, and were
stamped to prevent any possible substitu
tion.
The engine, without any running in, w-a:
-taken by ihe A.t.n. representative to
. BrouklandF. aud handed over to a we!l
-' known rider, and installed in the frame,
ayain under supervision. After 29 iaps
of the track, for running purjxisa', the
enpine was stripped, under supervision,
and no alterations vcre made except fur
a modification of tin- niapncto timing and
slight aUontion to the "Lston. With no
more attention the machine undertook a
, TJ-hoiir high-speed trial, during which nine
world's rerorciK- were l?.?ken and a sp*^
o)' 64.04 in.itJi. Wat- maintained throughout.
After that the engine was again stripped;
and carefully examined, and every pan
was found to be in perfect condition. The
importance of such a trial cannot be over
rated, since it proves that an absolutely
standard motor cycle is capable o£ creating
world's records over long distances with
out any attention other than that which
could be bestowed upon it br a keen
amateur rider.
