BRITISH LABOR POST
WAR PLAN
Proposal For Control Of
Banks
LONDON. May 15.—AAP.
After the war Britain should
seek, by international agreement,
to reduce tariffs and other impedi- <*>
ments to international exchange;
but there should not be a return
to laissez faire or capitalist free
trade, says a report by the National
Executive Committee of the Labor
Party on lull employment and
financial policy which will be pre
sented to the party's annual con
ference on May 29.
The report says that there should
be planning of imports and exports
and control of foreign exchanges.
An international development
board should be created to promote:
the development of backward areas'
iof the world.
I "British exports must be mi
i creased by at least 50 p.c," says
the report. '"There must be no re
:turn to the gold standard, or any
other rigid loreign exchange sys
jtem. but Britain should tnter into
! international arrangements for as
j much stability as possible. Britain's
chief wartime financial controls
i should continue after the war. The1
banks must be required to behave
as a public service and act in the
interests of the community."
