Mrs. Anthony dressed as
Mark Antony and Cleo-
patra when they attended
the party "A Night In
Ancient Rome" at the
Forrest, Canberra, home
of Mr. and Mrs. John
Howse. Ministers, guests,
and members of the diplo-
matic and consular corps,
and their wives, wan-
dered around the swim-
ming-pool and in the
garden, which was decor-
ated with Roman statues
and tall white pillars.
Mrs. Howse is president
of the A.C.T. branch of
the Linen Guild, which
works for the Order of
St. John of Jerusalem.
AT RIGHT: Mrs. Baillieu
Myer, who came from
Melbourne to act as one
of the judges, the Charge
d'Affaires for Portugal, Dr.
Jose de Mello-Gouveia,
who was dressed as
Bacchus, the God of
Wine, and Mrs. David
Fairbairn, wife of the
Minister for National De-
velopment, who was also
a judge (left to right). A
cloaked Roman soldier
opened car doors as
guests arrived, slaves
threw rose petals at their
feet, and a golden chariot
with a leather-clad driver
and bejewelled horse
stood motionless on the
lawn outside the house.

VULCAN, the God of Fire, was represented by
Mr. Doug Hyles, who temporarily left his stand on
the front wall of the Howses' house to greet Mrs.
Gordon Darling when she arrived at the party.

AT LEFT: Youthful threesome

at the party Mr. Simon Norris,
who was Caesar's ghost, Miss
Rosalind Gullett, dressed as
Lucretia Borgia, and Mr. Gerd
Perch, a young Roman returned
from the wars (left to right),
were intrigued with the minia-
ture figures of Roman maidens
which floated on the pool in
flower - filled, candlelit shells.

BELOW: Hostess Mrs. John
Howse, who made a charming
Diana, Goddess of the Moon
and the Hunt, with Neptune,
God of the Sea, represented
by Mr. G. McIntyre. Eleven
part-time statues posed for an
hour as gods of Roman
mythology poised on the front
wall of the house, which was
decorated to represent Caesar's
villa. Wine was served from

barrels, and for supper served
outside guests ate Roman
dishes with their fingers.

as a Roman Senator, with Mrs.

John Norris, who was a slavegirl,
in front of the Roman chariot,
which was driven by Mrs. Enrico Taglietti, who was masquerad-

ing as Mark Antony's son.

VENUS, the Goddess of Love,
portrayed by Mrs. Tony Pratten,
of "Walgrove," Yass, was seren-
aded by Orpheus, Mr. John Hyles,
as they stood in the colonnade of
white pillars leading down through
the garden to the swimming-pool.
