Madame Ky meets French couture
● For the sake of patriotism,
Madame Ky, wife of the South
Vietnamese vice-President, is
compelled to wear her country's
national dress wherever she
goes. However, in Paris recently,
where vice-President Ky is head-
ing the South Vietnamese dele-
gation at the peace talks,
Madame Ky yielded to a natural
desire to try on some of the
latest models from the great
Paris couture houses. This posed
an unforeseen problem. Madame
Ky wanted to try the garments
on at the hotel where the dele-
gation had its headquarters. But
there were only 20 rooms to
house the 40 members of the
delegation. What is more, the
heating didn't work properly. In
the end, Madame Ky was obliged
to beg a friend's hospitality.

MADAME KY loved this elegant
black Lanvin coat, above, with
its flared skirt, set-in sleeves, and
dashing light relief of shiny
buttons with red frog fastenings
— but reluctantly relinquished it.

not unlike some abbreviated
versions of that ubiquitous national
costume. Its welted tunic has a

OF this exquisite midnight-blue lame
evening gown by Lanvin, left,
Madame Ky said regretfully, "Unfor-
tunately I haven't a single occasion
to wear it. On official outings I
must wear my national costume."
