NED KELLY SHOT AND CAPTURED.
BYRNE KILLED.
TWO CHILDREN SHOT.
Melbourne, June 28.
The police last night surrounded the Kelly
gang at Jones's Hotel, Glenrowan, a town on the
North-Eastern line, 136 miles from Melbourne.
Superintendent Ware has been shot through the
arm. The gang tore up the rails near Glen-
rowan, ahead of the special train, but the pilot
engine prevented any mishap.
Glenrowan, June 28.
Ned Kelly is wounded and has been cap-
tured. The other bushrangers are in Jones's
Hotel and are surrounded by the police. Two
children have been shot in the hotel, one of
whom is supposed to be dead. A black tracker
has been grazed on the head. There are about
25 persons held prisoners in the hotel. The
whole of Glenrowan was stuck up. The police
arrived at the township at fifteen minutes past
3 this morning, and the fight commenced im-
mediately. Ned Kelly took to the bush,
but remained in the vicinity of the
township all night, and entered the fray
at daylight. He was attacked by Sergeant
Steele, Senior-constable Kelly, and Mr. Dow-
sett, a railway guard. They fought with him
for half an hour before firing him down. He
wore armour, and the police shots took
but little effect for a long time. Even-
tually Ned Kelly was shot in the leg
and fell. Sergeant Steele and the other two
rushed up and secured him.
The police have arrived from Wangaratta,
Benalla, and Beechworth.
All civilians have been allowed to leave the
hotel at Glenrowan. It is said that Byrne is
mortally wounded. Hart and Dan Kelly are
still in the hotel. The police are keeping up
incessant firing.
