SPORTING.
TRAINING NOTES.
A lot of work was done on the Old Adelaide
Course on Monday morning. Mr. Filgate was
-n the ground at daylight and sent Glenormis
ton a strontr calloo. bnt the little horse was not
thoroughly extended. viceroy, by himself,
went about half speed. Meg Merrilees cantered
and spurted. Rivalry led Don Carlos for a mile
and a half at a very slow pace, and then the
pair galloped another mile and a half, the O'ip
favourite appearing to do as she liked with her
companion. Shadow, Deiamere, and Enos went
about three quarters of a mile at their best pace,
finishing as their names are written. Mr.
Ferry's team and Jack's the Lad, Ivanhoe did
good work. The aew arrivals from Melbourne,
Devilshoof and Planet, did about two miles and
a half, the last quarter of a mile at their best pace.
Messrs. Jellett and Watson did not come down
till 11 o'clock. Filibuster, with neck sweaters
on, cantered a mile, and then did another two
ronnds at an improved pace, the last turn being
done in 2 min. 11 sec. Richmond, stripped, did
the same distance, but tbe old fellow went very
sluggishly, and though tbe boy used his whip
pretty freely, the time for the last circuit was
four seconds slower than Filibuster's. Watson
sent Timberoo (with Burke in the saddle) steady
exercise in company with Marie ; and Camel,
who has been clipped, and is remarkably fresh
and well, went quietly with the Ithaca colt for
two rounds, after which the youngster was
pulled off, and the hurdle racer did another turn
by himself.
The course proper at Morphettville has been
thrown open to trainers, and some gallops, which
have altered the tone of the betting market very
much, have taken place there. First Water was
tried over the Cup course, and did the distance in
3 min. 50 sec. This spin, considering the heavy
state of the course, was considered highly satisfac
tory, and the colt was backed for all the money
obtainable yesterday, leaving off at about 4 to 1.
On Monday morning Rothschild and Totalizator
were tried over seven furlongs, with their
South Australian Stakes weight up. Country
Girl joined in for the last half-mile, and
just beat Rothschild, who did Totalizator
easily enough at the finish. The time
for the last six furlongs was 1 min. 20 sec.
Rothschild was heavily backed yesterday, and is
now a firm favourite, the last wager taken being
100 to 80 ; whilst bis stable companion,
Total'zator, has been sent to the right
about, as fir SB the betting is concerned.
£1,000 to £500 about Rothschild was asked
for at Tattersall's last night, but no one
cared to lay. We saw 500 to 75 taken about
Belladrnm late last night, and tbe same price
was accepted about Filibuster, whilst 100 to 50
was laid that Rivalry beat Belladrum.
Veno was scratched by wire at 12 18 yester
day for the Hurdle Race, and at 12.30 Red Iron
wa» scratched for the Steeplechase.
His Excellency tbe Governor has notified to
Mr. S. Barnard his intention to be present on
both days of the S.A.J 0. Autumn Meeting.
The Government Offices, as mentioned in
yesterday's Rti/ista; will be closed on Cup Day
(Friday).
Symbol was scratched for all her S.A^F.C.
Autumn engagements last night.
The Adelaide Cup is now on view at Mr. H.
Steiner's establishment. Bundle-street. It is
very similar to last year's cup, being in tbe
form of a claret jug. and is a beautiful specimen
of the goldsmith's art.
