OPENING OF THE CRICKET?
SEASON.
The first Saturday in September is the time
honoured day for opening the colonial cricket
season, but this year only three or foar ont of
the seven as»ociated clubs turned out even for
practice. Of these toree wer* the clubs which
stood first, second, and third ou the list last
year, and who to doubt intend getting into
form again as early in the season as possible.
Football interfered very much with cricket ou
Saturday, and although the weather was
gloriously fine there were few wickets pitched
on the Park Lands. The Korwood men were
called out for practice, but tbe attractions of
the more rowdy and less scientific game proved
too much for many of the young players,
and only about a dozen of Captain Gooden's
men engaged in practice with tne bat and ball.
The JJorth Adelaide men turned out in much
better force. Indeed they had a first-rate game,
forty members being on the North Park Liuds,
and sides being chosen by Messrs. Phillips and
H. Stanes. The quondam captain (who this
season retires in favour of Air. A. Scott) did not
on this occasion lead his men on to victory.
They only scored 40, against 77 made by their
oipintttts. Eotttn once more headed the list of
individual scores with 23, Bradley miking 16,
Cbaciran 14, and Clsjrke 11. Some of the
bowling and fit'ldicg was very good. The
Hindmarsb critkettrs have been practising for
several net-ks pa*t, and are likely to play their
optuiug match on Saturday. Tbe Kensington
mea also donned the pads, but not for tbe
opening game. Most of the cricket clubs appear
to be waiting for tbe end of the football
season, which may be Eaid to be next
Saturday. We have beard of several changes
of club on the part tri well-known playing
members, but tbe relative powers of tbe various
teams cannot jei be gauged. The South Aus
tralian Club has resolved not to amalgamate
with any other club, nor to drop out of the
Association. On the contrary, we hear that
arrangements are being made for strengthening
its ranks by the preaeuce o£ a few more
cricketers, and that its chief supporters hope to
have a successful season. The Kent Club is
likely te lose a few of its best batsmen, but at
prtsent the number is uncertain. The South
Adelaide Club is a ' dark horse' still; and the
Kensingtons, so far as we can ascertain, are not
in & better position than of yore. \Ve give
below a few particulars concerning the meetings
of the Norwood and North Adelaide Clubs : —
The annual business meeting of the Norwood
Club was held at Jackman's Rooms, between
twenty and thirty persons being present. The
captain (Hr. J. £. Gooden) presided. Several
new members were admitted. A hearty vote of
thanks was accorded to Mr. C. 'W. Wren for the
services he had rendered to the club as Secretary
daring the past five years. It was unanimously
decided that the club should strongly oppose* say
project for the alteration of the name of the
Norwood Club. The following officers were
elected for the season :— Patron, Mr. E. T.
Smith, M.P. ; President, Mr. W. B. T. Andrews,'
J.P.; Vice-Presidents, several Norwood resi

Eleven Secretary, H. J. Bailey. Committee —

Gooden.
There was & large attendance at the North
Adelaide Club's annual meeting, at which Mr.
K. Searle presided. Several new members were
elected. The reports of the Secretary and
Treasurer were considered most satisfactory.
The Hon. the Chief Justice aud the Hon. J.
Colton were re-elected Patron and President,
and it was resolved to request the following
gentlemen to fill the positions of Vice- Presi-
dents :- Messrs. K. Searle, C. Peacock, IIP., J.
H. ilnlajaon, J.P-, J. V. Conigrave, J P., J. L.
Parsons, M.P., T. W. Harris, J. W. Colton, and
H. J. Hill. The other officers appointed were : —

surer, W. G. P. Joyner ; Assistant-Secretary,
KB. Colton; Committee, C. S. Leader, K. G.
Phillips, and W. Slight ; Association Delegates,
J. 'W. Colton and Joyner; Auditor, R. Allen,
jun. Various 'matters com-erning the manage
ment of the club were discussed at length, and
votes of thanks to the officers for the past
season and to the Chairman ilosed an interesting
and enthusiastic meeting. ?
