CORRESPONDENCE.
'jk uunous rrea&ox i-taiuiw. — jut. a. xrarris,
of Nairne, referring to a paragraph in the
Register of August 27, in -which it was stated
that a cow had calved twice at intervals of a
tortnignt, writes tnat be nas been among cattle
all his life, but never heard of such » thing
occurring. He adds — ^*The cow mentioned
used to break away from home, and could
always be found in the paddock from which
Bhe was taken by Mr. Dunn. This shows at
once that the cow had 'planted' the second
calf in the paddock, instead of baring had the
second calf a fortnight after the first.'' The
statement in the paragraph was to tke effect that
both calves were alive and strong.
'Advertiser.' — Yes, provided you put your
name and address on the cover and indicate that
the packet contains nothing 'in the nature of a
letter.' ?
' E. R.' thinks that the importance of the
trial of grabbing-machines for the £200 bonus
offered by the Government calls for greater
publicity than has been given to the matter.
We may mention that the Kcyal Agricultural
and Horticultural Society have definitely
arranged to hold the trial at Mr. O. Ragless'*,
Kangaroo Flat, near Gawler.
' Teamster.'— Clause 39 of the Impounding
Act empowers the District Banger to impound
u any cattle found trespassing on asy road,' &c. ;
and as no exceptions to this role are mentioned,
we suppose a ' team of working bullocks,' if
allowed to stray after being unyoked, could be
impounded.
'Subscriber.'— (1.) Clause 25 of the Im
pounding Act makes a poundkeeper liable to a
fine of £10 if he describes impounded cattle or
horses ' incorrectly or in an insufficient manner,
the proof whereof shall rest on the pound
keeper.' (2.) If a poundkeeper by error incor
rectly describes stock the animals are to be
readvertised and are ' to be kept the fall time
in pound' (».«., 21 days where the owners are
unknown and the stock are advertised in the
Gazette), and 'any additional costs for adver
tising, fees, and maintenance arising from such
error' are to be paid by the poundkeeper. Thus
where stock is incorrectly described the pound
keeper might have to keep the animals 42
instead of 21 days before selling them, and
would, we suppose, only be able to charge for
the first 21 days if the animals were claimed
before the sale' (3.) On this point you had
better consult a solicitor.
' B. B.' asks what is the position of Sir 'Wm.
Milne and the Hon. A. Hay, who as Directors
of the South Australian Gas Company contract
to supply the Government with gas, in view of
the Attorney-General's opinion aa to the appoint
ment of MJP.'s to the office of arbitrators. The
Contractors in Parliament Act does not apply
to members of public Companies.
' Land at Lake Bonney.' — ' Alpha,' referring
to information published in a receot issue on this
subject, wishes to state that the land available
for agriculture around Lake Bonney amounts
to ' at least 20 square miles,' while the cir
cumference of the lake (is 21 miles, it being six
miles long by five broad. Our correspondent
further asserts that the land between th»
lake and the boundary is 'all arable,'
and not * poor and scrubby,' and he men
tions that several paddocks of hay of excellent
quantity have been grown at Bal Ral, Salt
Creek, and elsewhere. Many colonists, he says,
would take up laud at the lake if they could,
whereas they are now ' driven out of the colon;
by the Government.' The district from
Blanchetown to the Border has, h« thinks, been
greatly neglected, as there is neither a school nor
a church provided. 'Alpha' adds to his complaint
the statement that 'a clergyman has never
shown his face in his district' — a circumstance
for which he seems to hold the Government
responsible, and he expresses a hope that they
will throw the lake land open immediately, so
that a fanning population may be attracted,
and he also trusts that the Wentworth Railway
will be 'started ere long.' Our correspondent
will oblige by observing the rule that corre
spondent should write on one side only of the
paper.
'Selector.' — You have either omitted to send
us your real name, or it has boen mislaid. Will
you oblige by forwarding it.
