I1 CRICKET
J ADVANX SHIELD
I (By "Silly Point")
The finale of the inter-Asiocia
tion cricket competitions will be
played at the Cairns Cricket
Ground next Sunday. The "A"
Grade competition is well-known
to cricket supporters, both young
and old, the trophy-the Advanx
Shield-having been presented by
Mr. G. H. Griffiths for perpetual
competition long before the com-
mencement of World War ll.
During tba war years no games
were played but, since the/ revival
of inter-Association play, Cairn«
has won the shield on every occa-
sion.
In immediate post war year, Mr.
G. R. Kelly donated a shield fdr
"B" Grade competition and Caima
bas been more successful than any
other team. The only occasion on
which another team has had ita
name inscribed on the Kelly
Shield was in the 1949/50 season
when the successful association
was Innisfail.
The Mullins' Memorial Shield
is a recent presentation by the
Mullins family of Innisfail and
Tully. This is for schoolboy com-
petition and in the first season
1949/50 was appropriately won by
Innisfail. Last season Cairns was
successful.
Information from Innisfail re-
garding the team chosen for Sun-,
day for th« Advanx Shield gives
promise of a very close game,
John Beaman is a newcomer to
Innisfail and in representative
games against- Tully bas made 51
not out and 101 out Jack Morgan
is known to Cairns players as an
aggressive No. 4 or 5 on the list
and showed his ability against
Tully by scoring 87 not out. He
bas also a century to his credit
in club cricket
Possibly the player who will at-
tract most interest most interest
is Geoff. Joy. the baby of the
team, who is just 16 years of age.
His batting average this season
is 50 runs. He will be remembered
for his success at Ayr last season.
Douglas, a bowler and Tom
Dickson, one of the old stalwart
batsmen need no introduction.
Maurice Murphy is an opening
bowler who will need watching.
In the match against Tully he
claimed two wickets in his first
over.
A point of interest Is that In-
nisfail, in two matches against
Tully this season, scored 400 runs
for the loss of only five wickets.
The Cairns Advanx Shield
team for the final has only two
changes from that which played
and defeated Eacham. McDonald
is absent from Cairns and con-
sequently is not available and Ol-
son has been dropped, their places
being taken by Blyton and Lang-
tree. The team is strong and has
eleven recognised batsmen and
ten bowlers, a most useful all-
round combination. The attack ls
varied with five rigbthand
medium paced bowlers, two left
hand medium to slow medium
and three right hand spin bowl-
ers.
To compare the Kelty Shield
teams is rather difficult. Caima
was successful in the northern
section of the competition by only
one point. In one match against
Kuranda the team was lucky to
force a draw. In order to reach
the final, Innisfail found it neces-
sary to play off against Tully. In-
nisfail has always provided stiff
opposition in this grade and a
forecast of the result would be
unwise.
Predicting results of schoolboys'
games is never an easy matter.
From year to year boys are pro-
moted to higher grades and their
places are taken by unknowns. In-
nisfail has proved superior in
their section 'of the Mullins* Mem-
orial Shield competition and
Cairns was not really extended in
their matches. With their teams'
name inscribed once on the
Shield, both teams will be giving
of their best to see which team
will have the honour of having
its name inscribed a second time.
The Advanx Shield game will
be played on No. 1 ground at the
Cairns Cricket ground, the Kelly
Shield match at the Martyn
street wicket and the Mullins'
Shield competition on No. 2
ground at the Cairns Cricket
ground._
