INCREASED BRICK
CONSUMPTION
STATE GOVERNMENT'S
ATTITUDE
CRITICISED BT SENATOR
WOOD
MACKAY. Dec ll.-The State
Government had not been sincere
in the past in its attitude td in-
creasing brick consumption in
Queensland and it waa to be
hoped, for thé sake of Building
generally, that it changed ita at'
titude.
This was stated to-day by the
Mayor Of Mackay (Senator Ian
Wood), commenting on the sale
of the Pindi Pindi Brickworks
as a going concern to-day. The
brickworks was to have been sold
piecemeal for liquidation, but
has now been bought as a going
concern by a Pindi Pindi farmer,
Mr. A. Gioiatti, who hopes to
have it working within three
months.
Senator Wood said lt was the
throttling power of tba State
Government's Prices Branch
which had prevented Pindi Pindi
bricks being manufactured and
sold at a reasonable price in the
past. Pindi Pindi bricks would
have been about £3 a thousand
cheaper than what Mackay had
been paying for imported bricks
had the prospective owners been
allowed to produce at the figure
they wanted to. Because of the
Government's attitude the works
had been standing idle When
building materials of all kinds
were in short supply and people
inadequately hotised. It was
nothing Short Of a tragedy, be
said. "____
