CAPITAL GOODS IN
AUSTRALIA
STOCK INCREASE VITAL
DUE TO IHMIGBATIOK.
CANBERRA, Apr. t.-The
' ntoek of capitel goods In Aus-
tralia mast be. increased by
about Jltffl 'fer revery person
added to the community, to
keep living standards at their _
: present . levels, ; stated the
' Minister for Immigration (Mr.
> H. G. Holt) in a broadcast to-
night.
He said this<would mean an an-,
nual capital programme of an ad-
ditional £200 millions. It was
planned to bring to Australia this
year, and each year for many
years to come, at least 200,000
migrants. t
"We could not do this without
imposing great strains on our
economic and social structure,-but
this vast undertaking, in which
we could not afford to fail, has
been carefully planned," Mr. Holt
said. ._
The migration programme was
designed to assist in winning vic-
tory by goodwill and Christian
friendliness, and not by weapons
of force and terror. He warned,
however, that great victories were
often not won cheaply. The intro-
duction of great numbers of
people created a host of problema
involving greater production and
a 100 per cent, increase annually
in home construction.
From this, however, Australia
had much to gain-the satisfac-
tion of generous and humanitarian
work, tremendous productive
strength, a greater home market
for products, a more self-
-contained economy better able to
withstand the shock of fluctua-
tions overseas, and to better
equip the country in men and
industries for defence.
