DECISION.
BRISBANE. Oct 15^-The

bane, Townsville and Calms.
< This decision, which was mada at
a commbtlon meeting in Sydney on
October 7, will apply also to the
chairmanships at other State cant*
tels anti Newcastle It ls understood
to ba part of a plan by the commis-
sion to overhaul and strengthen its
organisation to control waterfront
operations.
The Queensland chairmen affected
are: M. Boyd (Brisbane). N. Cham-
bers (Townsville) and O. W. Pitt
away (Cairns). It is understood
that they have been advised of the
decision and are now carrying on
with the acting rank. They will be
eligible for re-appointment.
Public applications tor the pos-
itions wal be sought in the next few'
days: Salaries for the new positions
are expected to be: Brisbane £950,
Townsville £800, Cairns £700, Syd-
ney £1300, Melbourne £1050, New.
castle £soo. Adelaide £900, Fre-
mantle £800 and Hobart £700.
It ls expected that other executive
positions of the employment com-
mittees will be thrown open for re-
appointment soon.
Waterside employment committees
are semi-Oovernment bodies set up
ja various Australian ports to admin-
ister waterside operations. They
equally represent the ship owners
and Waterside Workers' Federation.
Chairmen are appointed by the local
représentatives ot the wmwiuiim
and have casting votes, which in
most Instances are required to be
voiced. In this way, the chairmen
are virtual rulers of the waterfront
and Ita labour conditions.
