HOCKEY.
CHALLENGE CLIP FINAL.
Victory for University.
The West Australian Hockey Associa
tion resumed its fixtures on Saturday in
fine, invigorating weather and two chal
lenge cup finals provided exciting en
counters. University won the "A'" grade
Challenge Cup by three goals to two from
Cricketers, whom it had never, in many
encounters, previously defeated, while
the challenge cup final in the newly
formed junior grade went to Perth which
beat Fremantle 3-niL
Once again the results in the "A"1
grade on Saturday revealed the equality
between teams this season, no less than
three of the four games payed on the
Royal Showground being drawn. These
were the games between Perth and Scotch
Collegians, Christ Church and Suburban,
and Guildford and Old Modernians.
Apart from the challenge cup final, Pre
mantle, in beating C.B.C., was the only
team in this grade to obtain a decisive
result.
Playing Holm, in place of Neal, who
was injured last week, University went
straight into attack against Cricketers,
in the "A" grade challenge cup final
played at the Subiaco Oval, and, within a
few minutes G. Newman, the University
right-wing, sent in a fine centre across the
goalmouth. His scoring forwards, however,
merely swung fruitlessly at the ball as
it passed. Cricketers suffered a severe
set-back a few minutes. later, its steady
left-half, Guthrie, being injured by a
rising ball and taking no further part
in the game. He was replaced by Treen,
who worked hard but could make little
impression on the speedy University
right-winger.
It soon became apparent that the
students meant to spare no effort to win
their first challenge cup. Elliott, at
centre-half, was intercepting and spoil
ing well but though his disposals never
quite attained the firmness and accur
acy of his opponent, D. McKenzie, his
forwards were working so hard that they
remedied this defect time and again.
Their strenuous, bustling efforts seemed
certain to be rewarded at any moment
but their first goal, when it did come,
was scored in a curious manner. John
son stopped the ball from a corner and,
as he was rushed, passed it on to South
wood, whose smooth, hard shot glided
among the feet and sticks of the de
fenders until it slid past W. Turner into
the net. There followed another con
centrated burst of attacking by-the Uni
versity forwards, who narrowly missed
the goal on several occasions. Cricket
emr took the offensive and securing a
clearance from Wells, Jeffreys sped, un
molested, down the left wing until he
reached the' University back-line. There
he turned round and, watched interest
edly by the University defenders, sent
In a centre across the goal-mouth to
Carden, who. Inkster also having gone
out to watch Jeffreys, left the ball in
the net and- came away. Both sides
welcomed the interval a few minutes
later.
Lengthy Ddels.
On the resumption Cricketers made
several-strong attacks, Bandy and Byss
combineng, well and being foiled only in
their 'opponents'. circle, -but University
came again. Every forwasd and hlialf
back :being intent -on getting to the ball
before his .opponent, lengthy duels re
sauted outside Cricketers circle, until,
at last. a sit pass from Utting ,found
Johnson facing' the other .way and
dropped to the ground. While the.,,e
fenders were still looking for -the all,
Marshall stepped across and slammed it
into the net University eased.up slightly
and Cricketers took quick advantage of,,
the lull to initiate a series of determined
attacks through Bandy on the right wing..
Had- it not been for Holm, the winger.
would have been a greater menace to
the -University defenders than he was.
As it was, he galvanised .his .scoring for
wards into action at this stage and
Byass, made a fine run down, pursues
by three defenders, and finished off by
edging the ball brilliantly into the net
as he flashed past the goalpast.
There was great excitement as Univer
sly hurled itself into attack, again.
Within -two minutes of the bully-off
Johnson worked his way skilfully through
the Cricketers' defence, and passed the
ball across the goal-mouth. Marshall
and Utting. missed but Oriffiths, who
played well throughout, dashed in and
found. the gap on his side' of the goiL
Both sides made great efforts to improve
on their scores, and play became too
congested to be effective. The hard
hitting University backs came right up
to the half-line and seemed -bent on
driving the ball into the Cricketers' goal
biut the whistle blew without any fur
ther addition to the score.
There were patches of good play. in
the. other "A"i grade matches on the
Roytal Showground, but the only one of
the four that was productive of much
interest, Perth-Scotch Collegians, was
marred by occasional displays of ill
feellng - Fremoantle gave a meritoriius
display to hold its position on the grade
table at the expense of C.B.C, while
Guldford had most of the play in the
draw with Old Modernlaris.. Suburban
and Christ Church contested a rugged
drawn game.
In the "A"2 grade, S.IC. revetsed its
previous defest by East Cannington,
while Cricketers 'and Wesley. were also
successfutl -University made a great re
covery to draw with Perth
