SPORTING.

GOLF.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
K. Pix and R. D. Forbes Win.
The most outstanding incidents during
the week-end's golf were two holes in
one. On Saturday, at Royal Perth, C. H.
Turner played the perfect shot at the
short sixth, and yesterday, at Royal Fre
mantle, H. K. Maley holed in one at the
188 yards 13th. Despite the fact that club
championships were being played at most
of the courses, there was little very good
golf. At Royal Perth on Saturday, R.
Ainslie had a brilliant nine holes, taking
only 31 for the first nine. He did not
play as well over the second nine, but
finished with a 71. R. D. Forbes was in
brilliant form to win the Cottesloe cham
pionship. The high wind yesterday was
probably responsible for some of the poor
scores, although there are some players
who do not seem capable of playing well
in chamiponship events, and fail through
other causes than the weather.
In the club championship yesterday at
Royal Fremantle, K. Pix defeated P. G.
Bennett rather easily. Bennett, who has
been playing well and was expected to
provide stiff opposition, was quite off his
game. Pix was not playing particularly
well, but was four up at the end of 18
holes. He went on to win seven and six.
The final of the plate at Royal Fremantle
was more exciting. E. Clough and R. A.
Macbeth had a very interesting struggle.
Macbeth was one up halfway through the
morning round, but they were all square
at the 18th. Macbeth had a lead of one
hole after another nine holes, but Clough
overhauled him and was dormie one. At
the 36th, Clough sliced his drive on to the
14th fairway, but recovered well for a
bogey five and the match. On Saturday
a medal competition was won by K. Pettit
(18), who was one up. W. H. Butler (7)
was all square, J. J. O'Hara (3) one down
and K. Pix (scr.) two down. The "A"
grade was won by Butler.
P. G. Bennett, who was beaten in the
final of the Royal Fremantle champion
ship, was a semi-finalist in the Karrinyup
championship on Saturday. He was op
posed to G. P. Smith, who has held the
title for the last two year, and was
beaten after a very interesting game.
Bennett was one up approaching the 15th,
but Smith won the next two holes in
birdie 4gurts, and won two and one. In
the other semi-fial R. Paxton accounted
for E. H. I. Whittaker-six and five. In
the plate, HB.C. Watson beat N. Cuthbert
three and one, and L. E. Le Souef beat
S. G. Taylor four and two. A sweepstake
was won-by R. A. Cameron, who finished
all square,~from J. Barker, D. Leake and
J. P. Ainslie,-each of whom was two down.
Yesterday a four-ball best ball resulted
in a tie between N. Temperley and W. H.
Cooper and F. D. Leslie and L. G. Walker,
both pairs being seven up. J. Barker and
J. Pope,.two young players, were four up.
At Mt. Lawley on Saturday, S. Firmln
beat B. Wesson two and one in a cham
pionship semi-final. Yesterday R.
Mahoney, who previously eliminated P.
Tinlin, beat R?. Morley three and two.
In the plate, J. Webster beat A. Camp
bell three and one, and A. MIlikin beat.
C.JBourn two and one. A Stableford was
won by P. A. Dempster (26-151-41?) from
M. Catto (391-8) and J. Pye (36 7-8).
Th' qualifying round of the club cham
pionship and plate was played at Royal
Perth yesterday. in conjunction with a
handicap event. The scores were not par
ticularly good, only two players breaking
bbgey .with handicaps, and the highest
qualifying score was two strokes greater
than last year. The qualioers were:-E.'
BR. Hall, 73-77-150; N. H. Robinson,
78-73-151; R. Ainslie, 76-76-152; J. J.
Conway, 77-79-156; T. Hantke, 77-82-159;
O. K. Harrington, 81-79-160; J. Parker,
78-84-162; J. Blake, 77-85-162. Those
who -ualified for the plate were:--J. Hol
lands, 83-81-164; H. Marris, 84-83-167;
P. Hammond, 87-81-168; T. Wilson,
86-83-169; J. Dwyer, 88-82-170; W. Bees,
87-84-171; G. E. Frederick, 87-84-171;
Martin, 79-94-173. The handicap trophy
was won by H. Marris with 167-20-147,
Blake having 162-14-148. On Saturday,
R. Ainslie (71-scr.-71) tied with J. Mc
Mahon (83-12-71) for a medal, G. J.
Blake s?oring 80-?-73., In the "B" grade
R. Cargeeg wdn with 85-22-63.
B. D. F rbes in Form.
Yesterday, at Cottesloe, R. D. Forbes
won his ninth club championship when
he, defeated G. M. Bunning nine and
eight over 36 holes. Forbes was in splen
did form, being. two under bogey for 27
holes, including a penalty stroke. It is
possible that he has never played better,
and his form shows that he must again
be a force to be rekoned with ig the
State championships. Bunning played
well yesterday, but almost from the start
had no chance against Forbes's excellent
stroking. Bunning consistently out-drove
Forbes, but the latter was much more
accurate. The first two holes were halved,
and then Forbes gained the lead with a
bogey. orbes won'the next with a three,
and went to three up when Bunning, in
a hopeles position in the rough, picked
up. The sixth was halved when Porbes
incurred a penalty stroke. He addressed
his ball on the green and It moved about
half an Inch. At the seventh Bunning
won back a hole with a birdie four. He
played a beautiful draw shot round a
tree to be four feet from the pin with
his second. Forbes missed a two-foot
putt at the eighth, which was halved,
-and the ninth was also halved. Buning
reduced the margin to one up at the
tenth, where he played a splendid No. 2
iron shot to the green, but Forbes went
to twRo up againat the IIth, where Bun
nling's tee-shot rolled off the green. Forbes
won the 12th, and a birdie two at the
13th made him four up. His tee-shot at
this bole finished six inches past the pin.
The 15th wa .halved, but Forbes won the
16th and went to five up. Porbes then
won the next two holes, and finished the
morning round seven up.
The first three holes-were halved in the
afternoon, and at the fourth Forbes con
tinued his relentless march with an
other win. Bunning reduced the
lead with a birdie four at the fifth,
and the sixth was halved.: At the
seventh Bunning-reproduced his second
shot of the morning round and
won with an eagle three, making the
ascore six up. Forbes then won the next
three holes and the match. On Satur
day P. Manford won a medal with a
score of 75-5-70, W. A. Reel being second

each had two shots to spare. Gray missed
t his drive and hit a beautiful second to
within four yards of the 19th pin. Stott
hit a fine drive, but half-hit his second.
He won the trophy, however, after the
distances had been measured.

Professionals at Mt. Lawiey.
There was some fair golf at Mt. Law
ley yesterday when members of the Pro
fessional Golfers' Association paid their
annual visit to the club. In the morning
singles were played, and a high wind was
a factor in some of the comparatively
poor scores accomplished. The best score
off the stick was probably that of C.
Snow, who had an approximate 73. At
the long fifth hole he was on the green
in two, and at the sixth, into the wind,
played one of the best shots of the
match, an iron which found the green
with a delightful draw. Alberts was hit
ting a very long ball, as usual, and at
the seventh carried the green and landed
near the fifth green, a distance of about
300 yards. Thompson was in fair form,
and came home with an eagle.on the 18th.
His second, a No. 2 iron, was so close to
the pin that he knocked it in with the
back of the club. T. Howard had an
approximate 74, playing his usual steady
and reliable game. In the morning the
results were as follows:---H. Godden lost
to J. Webster (4); T. Howard beat S.
Firmin (4), three and two; E. Alberts
lost to C. Bourn (3) three and two; P.
Thompson beat E. Wesson (6), two and

Wesson, T. Cassidy and Godden lost to
