NATIONALISATION OF COAL.
Collie Advocates a Power Scheme
COLLIE, July 8.--Cocmentlng today
on a statement made at a meeting of the
South Banbmy Progress Association on
Tuesday night that the nationalisation
of the coalmining indushty would pave
the way for the establishment of smelt
ing works at unbury, the secretary of
the Collie National Coal and Power
Scheme Committee (Mr. T. M. Lowry)
said that he had made a simlar proposal
recently at a meeting of the South-West
district council of the Australian Labour
Party.
aM. Lowry pointed out, however, that
the establishment of a national power
schemne at Collie would be necessary for
the purpose rather than the nationalisa
tion of the coalmines. If Collie was
made the centre of a national power
scheme, as his committee had been advo
cating for some time,- power could be
supplled direct to Bunbury and. to other
centres in the South-West, enabling new
industries to be formed. Smelting works
at Eunbury for the treatment of Yampi
onim ore might be a commercial pro
position if power was made available
iuder a national scheme from the Collie
coalfield.
Mr. Lowry said that his committee was
stl seeking an Interview with the Pre
mier (Mr. WIlcock) to discuss the na
tionalisatfon proposals. Four represen
tatives had been appointed to meet the
Premier and Mr. A. A. Wilson, MILA.,
was giving the matter attention. -t was
possible that a further meeting of local
pubhlic bodies would be called shortly to
consider again the position that had
arisen in regard to the nationalisation
proposals. No action had been taken by
the Government since the decision of the
Legislative Assembly to appoint a Royal
Commissioner to inquire . nto the pro
posals.
