WEATHER.,
KURANDA. October. 5.T" I
September proved a' fairly 'dry
month in comparison .with-other years,
only.l57points:of rain falling in three
wet days,: ^whereas for'1" September,
1936, 699 points fell in eight wet days.
This year, too, has proved the driest
in the last. 17 years, the total rainfall
to date being 3683 points in S3 Vet
days. In the. same period in 1936, 91
inches 33 points were registeréd in
107 wet days.:
TOURISTS.
By the special rail motor which
arrived at ll "o'clock to-day, 58 tourists
from the Manunda visited Kuranda.
The motor continued to Fairyland in
the. afternoon and returned to thc
Cairns wharf at 4.20 p.m. Amongst
the visitors was Mr. Bennett,' assist-
ant purser of the Manunda, who was
making his first trip to these parts.
GENERAL.
With the timber and "concrete , work
completed on the new bridge across
the Barron River, under construction
by the P.E.I. Branch, nine employees'
services were terminated on Friday
last
The approaches and bridge proper
are at present receiving the bitumen
dressing. This bridge will be officially,
opened by the Premier of Queensland
(Mr. W. Forgan Smith) on the 15th
instant
MEETING. '
One of the best attended meetings
in many months was held in the
Kuranda Hall last Friday night, when
Mr. R. R. Veivers presided over an
attendance of thirty at a special meet-
ing of the Kuranda and District-Pro-
gress Association.
The spécial business to be discussed
was : to - hear the latest developments
regarding the projected road -from
Kuranda to Cairns.
Mr.. Veivers outlined the present
position and stressed the fact that the
time -was opportune for the various
authorities, whom, he was pleased to
see were taking an active interest in
this important link in tile district's
development, to confer with the object
of Macing their requirements before
the Go.eminent in a "united,,- front'
Other speakers supported these re-
marks and it was resolved that the
various authorities be. taken up with
for a conference to_be held at a suit-
able date in the hear future.
CRICKET.
The cricket match, . Freshwater
versus Kuranda, which" eventuated' at
thi Kuranda sports ground last Sun-
day, culminated in a great victory for
the Kuranda representatives, who woh
the day by an innings and 23 runs.
Knowles proved the best of the
wielders of the willow for the visitors,
top-scoring with 28 in-the first innings
and 17 in the second. Young Arthur
Austin, for Kuranda, both batted and
bowled well, and a good day's sport
was enjoyed by all. The Freshwater
team arrived by a special rail motor
on Sunday morning, returning home
at. 5.15 p.m. the same day. The

Mrs. Long, seor. (Bowen) and Mrs.
Reg. Eyles "and baby Lenore, of
Cairns,, were visitors to Kuranda to-
day as the guests of Mrs. K. Low
cock. .
I.Iiss E. Beattie, manageress of the
railway refreshment rooms, Kuranda,
left on Saturday for Ipswich, where
her father is very il!. Miss McCarthy,
of Cardwell, is relieving at Kuranda.
Mrs. "M. Anderson arrived from
. Mulgrave Station during the week,
[visiting -relatives at Mantaka and
Kuranda, and leaves for Babinda on
Thursday.
