THE SCHEME COMMENDED.
"A National Necessity."
.ELaBOURNE, May 18.-Approval of
the Commonwealth Government's na
tional health insurance scheme was ex
pressed today by the charmnan of the
Colonial Mutual Life Society (Sir Harry
lawson) at the annual meeting of share
holders of the society.
-The national health and pensions
scheme provides for compulsory insurance
in both fields in which the society ope
rates upon a voluntary basis, and it is
obvious that its inauguration will have
some effect on the sodetys activities,
he said. "Nevertheless, the directors feel
that the introduction of the compulsory
acheme is a national necessity. The Gov
ernment very wisely proposes that pro
tident and welfare oranisations such as
this society and kindrei institutions shall
play a part in the administration of the
scheme, thereby enurng that the aecn
Pnulated experience of these or
will be retained for the benefit of the
conmmmity.
"Further, the national scheme by its
ery nature can provide only minimum
benefits. A large section of the com
munity is outside the range of the scheme.
and many who are within its range will
require to supplement the mi.imur,
benefits of the national scheme by pri
vate insurance.
"In AuStralia, in spite of the great
development of life assurance and acci
dent and sickness insurance in recent
years, most persons are insuficiently
covered against the financial strains that
always accompany premature death, old
age or invalidity. ard it is probable that
the widespread nature of the Government
plan will lead many persons who have not
fully appreciated the necessity for these
types of insurance to realise their values."
