HELPING WOMEN
PRISONERS.
Broadcasting Governor's Work
.IISS Margery Pry, now a Governor of
the British Broadcasting Corporation,
is best known, perhaps, for her work for
prisoners. It is never forgotten in Hollo
way Prison, England, that she and Miss
Jean Alexander were. the first to teach
the women prisoners handicrafts.
They were not encouraged at first, but
when Miss Lilian Barker came into prison
work handicrafts began to flourish She
inspired the present Deputy Governor at
Holloway with her enthusiasm for handi
crafts, and during the last six months
the women prisoners rmade over £200 by
the sale of their voluntary work.
One of the six women sentenced to pre
ventive detention has found an interest
for her spare time in making Japanese
gardens in old gramophone records, which
she heats and bends into bowl shapes.
With odd pieces of coloured wool the
women crocheted circles and made
Afghan rugs.
Another woman embroidered 23 kinds
of wild flowers and eight birds on her
teacloth. The women take great pride
in the lampshades they make of moire
and art glass.
