COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE.
YANKALlLLA.May28.
we have nad some very seasonable rain during
the last fortnight, and our farmers are as busy as
bees.
Trade is very dull.
ihe tine new bridge over the Bungala is on the
eve of completion. The approaches are finished,
and the concrete is being laid on the planking.

been held, and a Committee appointed, till Excel
lency Sir James Ferguson has been invited to
perform the opening ceremony, but it is doubtful
whether he will lie able to be preaont Should he
not it is probable there may be no formal ojxmiiiB
at all. which would be a great pity, as the inhabl
twits of the district have for some time been look*
ing forward to it and anticipating a visit from His
Excellency on the occasion.
The Committee appointed a few weeks ago to
collect subscriptions for the widow and family of
the late Aaron Ryles, who was drowned a short
time ago, have, I understand, got together about
£45.

Bernces are being continued in the Oddfellows'
flail, bo that we have now six denomination*
holding services on Sundays, and all appear to bo
well attended aud supported.
The teetotal movement here has received
another stanch supporter in the Hev. Mr. Uroerr
Wesleyan minister. A Band of Hope meeting was
held in the Wesleyan Chapel on Friday, when
recitations and music were given by several
members. A vocal duet by the Misses Henson
was Bung with an artistic finish considerably
beypnd the usual Btyle of amateurs.
The farmers are crying out for rain, little having
fallen as yet here, whilst places within five or It)
miles have had heavy Bhowcrs.

On Wednesday evening an entertainment wa»
given by the Mutual Improvement Stclety in the
Council Chamber, presided over by Mr. 8. Stewart
The Chairman opened with an Impressive address,
in which he pointed out the benefits derived from
such associations, and warmly urged all young
men to join, so as to help in future movement* of
this nature, as well as to ilt thenuelves to assist in
the .improvement of those who are to follow, After
a piece entitled ' Welcome' hod been euldently
Bung by the choir, Mr. A. Winter, our respected
schoolmaster, gave an entertaining and instructive
lecture on ' Animation.' After briefly describlnir
the different kinds of animation known in creutlou,
the lecturer went largely into the benefit* to b*
derived from the culture of the mind, and the (treat
results to be achieved by a proper uso of the
reasoning faculties. He enlivened the subject with
numerous anecdotes, and wound up with an
amusing recitation, given with much spirit.

turtainments in this district. It is intended to giva
