BRiTAIN AND CANADA.
The New Trade Agreement.
(British Official Wireless.)
LONDON, April 27.-A resolution
amending the Ottawa Agreements Act
(1932) for the purpose of giving effect to
the new Canadian trade agreement was
approved by the House of Commons by
265 votes to 126 today. Certain features
of the agreement had been criticised by
Labour and Liberal speakers on the
grounds that it was inopportune at a
time when trade negotiations might be
impending to diminish the elasticity of
the tariff position. /
The President of the Board of Trade
(Mr. Walter Runciman) recommended
the aseement as part of the
government's general policy of re
ducing trade barriers. The duty reduc
tions covered about 40 per cent of British
trade with Canada. He thanked the
Canadian Government for having met
the British Government most generously.
The agreement would increase Imperial
trade without increasing a single duty
on foreign goods on either side.
