PROPOSED HOTEL AT COMO.
Site in Residential Zone Refused
The South Perth Road Board has re-
fused to allow the building of an hotel
at Como on a site within a residential
area. At a meeting of the board on
Friday night a request to be allowed to
erect a hotel at the corner of Labouchere
road and Preston-street, Como, was re
ceived from Mr. H. H. Cornish, of the
Gosnells Hotel On the motion of Mr.
H. A. Pilgrim, it was decided to inform
him that the board recently fixed busi-
ness areas in Como and regretted its in
ability to vary them.
Mr. Cornish's letter stated that he
bought the land, comprising five blocks,
six weeks ago. He had since canvassed
within a radius of half a mile of the area
and to date had over 80 per cent of the
householders' signatures petitioning the
granting of a hotel licence. As the site
was in a residential area he asked the
board to gazette it as a business area.
Mr. Pilgrim said that the board had
fixed the business and resiiential areas
at Como after mature consideration and
if it varied them to allow the building
of a hotel it would place itself open to
the charge that it was taking sides.
The chairman opposed the proposal
to reject the application. "We will be
pushing the hotel nearer the beach.
which we do not want," he said. "We
should leave it open so that if the State
Licensing Board agrees to the proposal
we can allow the building to be erected
on the site chosen."
Mr. D. F. Vincent said that the board
had gone to a lot of trouble to zone the
district and now certain members wanted
to amend the scheme for such a building
as a hotel. Some members did not seem
to know their minds for five minutes.
They were playing into the hands of
vested interests. If the board altered the
zoning to suit hotel interests it would be
showing the utmost inconsistency. It
should guard its steps very carefully be-
fore it altered the scheme for a hotel,
which was obnoxious to a great many
people.
Refusal to Receive Deputation.
A request that the board receive a
deputation from the Como Vigilance
Committee, opposing the granting of a
licence for the proposed hotel, was re-
ceived at the meeting from the secretary
of the committee (Mr. A. Grundy).
Mr. Vincent said it would be a dis-
courteous act if the board declined to
receive the deputation. The board had
spent a great deal of money on improv-
ing the beach at Como. If a hotel were
built there much of the attractiveness of
the resort would be lost. It was the
board's duty to hear the views of Como
residents. He moved that the deputa-
tion be received at the board's next meet-
ing.
There was no seconder and the motion
lapsed.
Mr. Pilgrim moved to the effect that
the deputation be not received. He did
not hold a brief for, or against the hotel,
he said. The matter was primarily one
for the Licensing Court. The board
represented the district as a whole and
the feeling was not unanimous on the
question. It would not be fitting for
the board to take sides.
The chairman: If we received a depu-
tation from one side we would soon have
to meet one from the other, and there
would be endless discussions.
The board decided not to meet the
deputation.
