LACROSSE.
Carnival Team's Prospects.
(By "Crease.")
With the approach of the 1936 Ail
Australian Lacrosse Carnival to be held
at Adelaide from August 8 to August 15,
chief interest in lacrosse circles centres
in the prospects of the West Australian
team. It is hoped that this team will
continue the progress its predecessors
commenced in Adelaide in 1926. Since
then Western Australia has improved its
position steadily in interstate competi
tions. Finishing fourth in 1926, in Ade
laide, the West Australians finished third
in the 1929 carnival held during the
centenary celebrations at Perth. In 1932,
the West Australian side suffered defeat
only at the hands of Victoria, finishing
in second position, having narrowly de
feated South Australia. Last year, at the
Subiaco Oval, this State avenged its de
feat by beating Victoria for the first time
in interstate history.
Western Australia has, therefore, dur
ing the last four seasons, defeated all
States. The local team is displaying ex
cellent form and the physical fitness of
the players is amply displayed by the
untiring efforts at the week-end training
runs. Several unfortunate strains suf
fered by leading interstate players such
as Berry, Rudderham and Knight have
caused the selectors some concern during
the last week.
On Sunday last the State players were
given a severe test against a team drawn
from players not making the trip. The
results were satisfactory, although the
lack of cohesion among the forwards and
centrefield is giving the coach (E. L.
Berry) food for thought. A. Horner and E.
Johnson are showing better understanding
while Harold Johnson seems better able
to score from an individual effort, par
ticularly while employing his effective
back-hand flick shot.
The late withdrawal of Peacock seems
to necessitate the return of Berry into
a full back position. This is unfortunate,
for his clever leading from defence or
attack played a prominent part in the
success of the 1932 team.
The manager of the team (Mr D. DC.
Johnson) has had his time well occupied
in arranging details of the trip. Others
who have this week indicated their in
tention of making the trip are Phil Byers
(Nedlands Club) and J. McAlister, a
former member of the East Fremantle
Club.
Although the Victorian and South
Australian teams have not yet been an
nounced, advice from Melbourne indic
ates that most of the men who visited
Perth last season will be in the Victorian
carnival team. A likely addition will be
the inclusion of the speedy Malvern at
tack, H. Woods, and, possibly, Unken
stein and W. Edwards.
The Queensland selectors have an
nounced their team, which will be led by
E. Hubbard, the star forward of the 1929
carnival team. A. Tealby is vice-captain.
Others in the team who have carnival
experience include E. Farquhar, Boucart,
E. Conroy, S. Tealby and S. Holloway.
The team is stated to be exceptionally
fast, excelling in stickwork and display
ing splendid tactics. Mr. H. Kilgour is
manager of the team.
