NEW ZEALAND.
The Ministry, after a long debate, had a
majority of seven on September 10 on a ques
tion raised by the Opposition, which was con
sidered a teat of the strength of Darties. On a
motion of no confidence on October 2 the
Ministry had a majority of nine. .
The second reading of the Education Bill has '
been carried by 41 votes to six. It was stated
by Mr. Bowen, in reply to questions, that the
principle of the Bill was to give education and ;
to exclude all religious teaching, except- as pro
vided by clause 85. He does not believe that;
there will be. any interference with liberty or I
conscience. ' ,
An agent of the Hawaiian Government has
arrived to make arrangements for the emigra
tion of Maories and Friendly Islanders to. the
Sandwich Islands. ?? ?, t

1,469 new policies were issued during the last
year for £565,928. The new premiums thereon
amounted to £20,777; total annual income}
£91,995 ; death claims, £11,750 ; accumulated!
fund, £219,394, being an increase during the
year of £65,677 ; number of policies in force.
7,343, assuring £2,734,602. It is stated there)
are only seven Companies in Great Britain
whose new business exceeds the above, and they
have been at a greater proportionate cost. i
The Government haB made itself obnoxious
by its very extraordinary action inthe7Fafca
Maori libel case, and. its prosecution or perse
cution of Mr. Geo. Jones for alleged libel on the1
Attorney-General. The Waka 31-tori, a Maori
paper printed by the Government, :; haying
libelled the Hon. H.- Eussell, that gentleman
look an action against them for £10,000, and a
Jury has awarded1 him £500 ? and expenses,
amounting to £5,000, which has to come out of
the taxpayers' pockets. Mr. Jones ,has been
committed for trial; but the action of the
Attorney-Geueral throughout has. been widely
condemned. ' : - - . j
The Auckland Lunatic Asylum took fire on
September 20, and the centre and left wings
were totally destroyed, and one female patient
was burnt to death. Another patient says that
she set fire to the buildings because she was put
to sleep with the Maori women.
