WEST CAIRNS BOWLING
CLUB
LAYING OF GREEN
FINE PROGRESS MADE
Very satisfactory progress in lay-
ing the first green of the West
Cairns Bowling Club in the Cairns
cricket ground area has been made
during the past 12 months. This was
stated by the president of the club
(Mr. M. P. Winkworth) in making
his report to the annual meeting of
the club on Monday night last.
Mr. Winkworth oulined the pur-
chase of the site of the club, stat-
ing that it had an area of two
acres With a seven chain frontage
to Gatton-street, bordered on its
others sides by the Cairns cricket
ground ovals, with sufficient area
for two greens and club house.
Mr. Winkworth added that a de-
benture scheme was commenced
and by the time of the annual
meeting, £1965 had been subscrib-
ed.
He continued, "Early in May,
work on the first green was com-
menced and has been steadily pro-
ceeding. The present state of the
green ls that all ditches are placed,
soil to a depth of seven inches has
been placed, a further three inches
of black sub soil placed and spread,
and blue couch grass has been
planted and is growing rapidly.
"Some of the material for the
fences has been secured and more
is on order. Electric lines have
been laid to the site of the pump
and other equipment has been pur-
chased. To the end of June, £902
has been utilised in building the
green."
Mr. Winkworth added that a blue
print of the proposed club house
had been received from the Q.B.A.
He paid tribute to the voluntary
service given by officials, members
and their friends.
He referred to the sad passing of
the club's first secretary (Mr. Geo.
Nix), and paid tribute to his work
for the club.
Mr. Winkworth concluded that
the club at present had 40 financial
members and many inquiries had
been received regarding membership.
Lady members had attended club
meetings and it seemed certain
that the club would have a maxi-
mum membership by the time the
green was ready for play in the
near future.
The club's financial statement re-
vealed that debentures taken out
to July 30, 1951, numbered 1695.
and that 320 debentures had been
taken out between July 1 and July
30, making a total of £2015.
