ARCHBISHOP AGREES
"REUCTANTLY"
TBIAL OP CASH BETTING
OFFICES
I LONDON. June 26 <A-AJ>.).
!The Archbishop of Canterbury
(Dr. Geoffrey Fisher) said to-day
that he thought the proposal to
set up cash betting offices should
be tried.
Speaking at the Canterbury
Diocesan Conference on the re-
port of the Royal Commission on
Gambling; Dr. Fisher said the
present law about street betting
was unenforceable. The report
was a little inclined to soft-pedal
the extent and the evüs of gamb-
ling, he added.
The Archbishop said that even
though the report pronounces
against the idea of a State lot-
tery, its opposition is based on
profit and loss and not on any
principle.
"There is, however, one particu-
lar proposal-for the registration
of bookmakers and the licensing
of cash betting offices-which will
excite controversy. I am in-
clined to think that the proposal
should be tried. Most reluctantly
I feel that the proposed change is
the only reasonable one," he said.
