AURUM WINS A DOUBLE,
MELBOURNE, Saturday..
Tlia lovely weather that prevailed to
day ensured a very large attendance
at Flemington, and the ftnal gathering
in connection with the spring meeting
of. .the. Victoria Race. Club was a
thorought success. The bright sun
shine induced the lad'iea to attend in
:large numbers, and many.dresses ori
ginally intended for the Cmhp were worn,
so that the lawn presentedl an animated
and brilliant spectacle. Figllowing are
the details of the racing:

Of 10 sovs. each, with 800 sevs. added;
second, 50 sovs; third, 20 sovs. from
stake. One mile and a quarter.

Aurum had the lead at the start, and
kept it easily until the finish, winning by
two lengths, Fleet Admiral, twelve lengths'
away, third. Time, 2mn.. 12%sec.

Lee-Metford was left at the post. Ros
common soon took the lead, with Novus,.
Little Widow, Canta, and Hainault closely
pressing. Hainault came up to Ros
common at the distance, and Little Widow
was also prominent for a few strides. Cor
dite, coming forward nearing the post,
had a hard struggle with Roscommon,
ultimately beating him by a head. Little
Widow was two and a half lengths away,
third. Time, 54sec.

added; second horse to receive 50
sos. out of the stake. One mile
and three-quarters.

Surge took the leading position from
the start, closely attended by Rosella,
Dreamland, and Bundook. Positano played
a waiting game. Up the straight it be
came evident that Surge would be a com
paratively easy winner, and that the
struggle would be for second place. Bun
dook worked hard against the favourite,
but Positano beat him by a neck. The
winner came in three-quarters of a length
ahead. Time, 3min. 3sec.
SECOND STEEPLECHASE.
Handicap - sweepstakes of 6 soys. each,
with 300 added; second horse. to :re
ceive 50, and the third 25 soys. 'out
of the stake. About three miles.'

Whernaide had control of the race
throughout, leading The Vicar with two
lengths to spare. Songster had Queen B
easily beaten. Ditto, The Vicar, and
Cedric were the only others to come home.
Walter was the first to fall at the back
of the course. Grandwing then lost his
rider at the jump before treble. Going
round the second time, Vigil, Dondi, and
Peveril went tumbling down one after
the other. No one was hurt. Time, 6min.

Aurum soon secured a good lead, fol
lowed by Battalion. At the turn Aurum
was a length in front, with the other
three close together. Coming up the
straight, the winner had gained the race,
and a good struggle took place between
Coil and Battalion for .second place, the
latter coming up at the close. Time,
3min. 34sec.

Moonlyong took the lead in the first
instance, then Beau Brummel showed up.
In the straight the horses got in a clus
ter, but the winner pushed through, and
got ahead, gaining the victory by half a
length, Amnesty taking second place just
at the post. Time, 2min. 7%sec.
