FURTHER PARTICULARS.
It has transpired that the Japanese
gunboats cut off the Kowshung from.
the Chinese convoy and ordered her
commander to proceed to Japan.
To this order Captain Gainsworthy
gave a distinct refusal, and thereupon
the Japanese cleared his decks with the
machine guns, and followed this up by
exploding a torpedo under her.
The Chinese fleet is remaining in
shelter.
Troops are being massed at Takow,a
treaty port in China, for transmission
to Coren.
A gunboat named the Theokin has
been captured.
The Japanese gunboats shelled the
Chine.e troops which ,ere landed at
Yusan so as to prevent them junction
ing with the Coreans near Seoul.

It is reported that th. Japanese gun
boats have destroyed several Chinese
transport steamers at Tapow.
LONDON, JULY 31.
China has ordered four torpedo boats
from Germany in order to cope with
the Japanese naval forces, which have
so far proved victors.
The Chinese Government has also
sent orders to the United States for
15,000 tons of tinned beef for the army
provisions.
.,The Japanese fleet] has not as yet
interfered with the Chinese maritime
customs with Corea.
It has transpired that the Japanese
Admiral in charge of the gunboats
which attacked the Chinese convoy and
torpedoed the Kowshunk thrice offered
to save Captain Gainsworthy and crew,
but the gallant sailor declined, and
stuck to his ship. The Japanese in
formed the captain that they had
orders to sink the vessel, with the
Chinese troops. Captain Gainsworthy
replied that he would remain on his
vessel.
Japan has refused the offer of the
United States to mediate in the diffi
culty.
