UPPER RI?I AROOMA..
At last the state'sohool-room is to be
built, the' money for which wis voted the
session before last. Mr. Peter Smith's
tender having been accepted is a good
guarantee that the buildingwill be erected
expeditiously and in g workmanlike
manner.
Our Public Library has been removed to
the Town Hall, where Mr. J. H. Heathorn,
secretary, has nicely arranged the books in
one of the rooms at the rear of the as
sembly room. Mr. IHeathorn is making
out a list for twenty pounds'worth of books,
to be added to the catalogue, that would
compare favourably already with most
country libraries. As the subscription is
only 2s. 6d. per quarter, I am surprised
.that the number of members is not larger.
SIt is regretted that Dr. Davis has leftthe
district; however, it is very comforting to
know that with the large population there
is so little sickness, but unfortunately in
mining districts accidents will occur, and
it is then that the medical man is wanted
promptly.
On tie 1st instant, at the quarterly meet
ing of the Church of England Committee,
much dissatisfaction was expressed by
members at the continued delay in the
appointment of a minister, as only for Mr.
S. B. Phillips, who has conducted Divine
service on Sundays since the departure of
the Rev. Mr. Clampett, the church would be
closed. The thanks of the district are due
to Mr. Phillips, his brother William, and a
few young ladies, for were it not for them
there would be no Sunday-school.
The delightful spring weather continues.
I never saw the blackwood and wattle
bloom so profusely. Thero is abundance
of grass and clover. Stock looking remark
ably well.
There is more clearing and sowing this
year than formerly, and when there is
railway transit instead of hundreds of
acres there will be thousands ploughed, as
heavy crops are certain, but the market is
limited at present. One settler is employ
ing thirty men.. This means money at 41:
a week and tucker.
