THE HAMBURG CUP.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir— In answer to 'Marquis, permit me
to explain the exact circumstances connected
with the Hamburg Cup.
Tn r-nr nrnm-amme we felt bound to have
a two-mile flat race, but feared that but few
entries would be made, many horses not
being thought able to compete with the
Duke of Wellington. We therefore did not
make it a sweep, but provided a very neat
racing cup. Finding that we had a good
field, we determined prior to the letter of
'Marquis' (and acquainted some of the
owners of our intention) to add to the cup
the entrances and acceptances. This we
intend to do, and trust that if ' Marquis'
be one of the owners who intend running,
he will be pleased ; and if he be one of the
outside public, he will duly appreciate our
efforts to show some sport on the 2nd
January, which has been our main object
from the commencement.
I am, Sir, &c,
M. L. CONNER, Secretary.
