FINGAL.
(From our own Correspondent.)
I regret to state a melancholy and fatal
accident occurred within a few miles of
this township on Monday afternoon last,
when, owing to the upsetting of a cart,
a child named Margaret Rainbow, daughter
of Mr. Joseph Rainbow, was almost in-
stantaneously deprived of life. The only
occupant of the cart besides the unfortunate
child was her brother, a lad about twelve
years of age, who was driving, and in
passing a rather dangerous rivulet known
as Cox's Creek, the cart was capsized, and
a bag of flour which it contained thrown
upon the child; this the brother was un-
able to remove, and failing to extricate his
sister from the dangerous position in which
she was placed, he ran to Mr. Ford, jun.,
who was about a quarter of a mile behind
driving his team; in a few minutes he was
upon the spot, but too late to save the life
of the child. The inquest was held on
Wednesday, and a verdict of accidental
death returned.
The repairs to the machinery of the
Midland Company are now completed,
and they commence crushing this morning.
The accounts from the Black Boy con-
tinue to be very satisfactory. Teasdale
and his party are busily employed fitting
up their small machine, which will be at
work within another week. Mr. Spong
has returned from his prospecting tour,
perfectly satisfied with what he has seen
of the reefs; and as he has proceeded to
Hobart Town to report progress, we may
look upon another Quartz Crushing Com-
pany as already formed.
