MsLLoonRr, Fen. ?0.-(From the Journal

be quoted of easy sale at t151. to 161. 1s. with
avery strong demand Stocks in town are now
rapidly diminishing. and if the Adelaide people
can only afford to hold on, and keep their flour
back for another month or two, a considerable
advaoce may be established. All the markets
for grain have participated in the rise
of flour, and onto are better, although toe
actual improvement is but Sd , and
natwirhatanding an idea which has uot abroad
that thaey must rise, no price above hS. 4d. can
be got for Scotch : the news of such short ship

of stock as ours is just now, formerly have at

but being an article which can only be bought
for cash, very little speculation has ensued, be

Scotch will become not only restricted, but im

Since the departure of the November mall
business has been completely paralysed, the
severity of the crisis influencing unfavorably the
wine and spirit markets, as well as those tor
every otherdescriptlon of produce t no forced
sales of any consequence having been as yet
resorted to for the purpose of reailsatlon it may
with truth be afirmed that with complete sltag
nation the mischief at present ends.
'The cessation of heavy shipments to the colo
nies must tend to relieve those markets, and will
possibly mitigate the heavy fail which the news
of the commercial disasltrs here and on the
continent will Induce (especially as regards
brandy), and will possibly prevent any serious
fall in the prices of sound wines, which cannot
from their scarcity be replaced from hence
except at high quotlations.
The present state of things will, it is hoped
prevent that constant emnx of inferior wines
and spirits, which hitherto to a great estent Iha
proved no more than the transfer of unsaleabli
commodities from one market to anotbsor, and
although some may be forced into consumption
a considerable portion must remain valueless h
the bonded depots of Melbourne and Sydney,
thus onfairly influencing the sales of mors
genuine sorts.
Brandy, in the absence of any export demand
remains at nominal quotations.
lRum in limited demand, at easier rates.
Geneva and British spirits lower.
Sherry.-l'he latest advices to hand froe
Xeres announce the market without alteration
holders continue to ask advanced prices, whicd
it is Impossible for shippers to accede to, unles
the state of the trade generally would permit o
n considerable rise upon present quotations
The stock of sound wines remains small. The
Louisa has cleared at Cadis for Sydney direct
with 390 butts. This .cargo, and that by thk
Equator to Blelbourne in Mlay last (250 butts)
will bhe the only direct shipments to the Aus
tralian ports this year.
Brandy.-Our market for brandy, of the
vintage 1856, remains completely inanimate;
older vintages, from their scarcity, havr
lately found purchasers for home trade in small
lots at full rates--1s. 2d. is the nearest price
for Martell's 1856; but as there are no transac
tions advised it is quite impossible to quotae
price. NOise of the Cognac shippers have a
yet addressed their friends with quotations fo
brandy of the present year's crop.
