TOO MUCH FUSS ABOUT VITA
MINES.
Eat wholesome food-and the vita
mines will look after themselves. This, in
offre'. is thc advice of Sir .lames Cricli
tou-lirownc, who discussed the over-
rated vitamine when speaking at a din-
ner given by Bovril, Ltd., to the Insti-
tute of Grocers on September '21 i.-isl.
He urged the public not to be intimi-
dated by what they heard about vita
mines-a word as comforting in dietetics
as Mesopotamia in theology. No doubt
the entire want of them might induce
ricket*, ii'm ilis, or scurvy, but it was
only li) years since we first made their
acquaintance, and until then mankind
had gone on getting their vitamines
without any fuss, guided by appetite and
commonsense. A single lettuce leaf
would give, he believed enough vitamines
for a fortnight. He heard lately of a
woman who went into a grocer's shop
and asked for a pound of mixed vita
mines, which was very much like ask-
ing for a pound of radium. Ile realised
the importance of an abundant supply of
fresh milk for children, and that fresh
fruit and vegetables should enter more
largely into our dietary than they had
until recently, but he was satisfied that
extravagant and misleading notions
about vitamines were prevalent that
might do harm by reducing the consump-
tion of some valuable foods. Ile denied
that they were absent in pork, preserved
. fruits, and vegetables. "¡Sly advice to
the masses of thc people," he said,
"would be 'go on getting a sufficient and
very varied supply of wholesome food,
and don't bother your heads about vita
mines.' " Sir James added that with
the apotheosis of the vitamines non-
sensical attacks had been made on tin-
ned food. They had been warned that
ptomaines might be hidden in them. For
every case of ptomaine poisoning due to
tinned feeds there were a dozen due
to fresh foods.
