PERSONAL.
His Excellency the Governor was prê-
tent at iSt. John's Ambulance annual
demonstration, which took place last
Friday evening in St. George's Hall.
Miss Lee Steere is the guest of Mrs.
Herbert Davies at Ford House.
His Grace thc Archbishop of Perth
leaves this week for Sydney to attend
a conference of bishops nud the General
Synod.
Miss Myra Mathews left by the Zea
landia for New Zealand, where, she in-
tends spending some months with
friends, and will also be present at her
brother, Mr. Vernon Mathcws's and
Miss Malcolm's, marriage ut Christ-
church.
Last Sunday morning nt St. John's
Church, Fremantle, his Grace the Arch-
bishop of Forth dedicated a beautiful
carved chair in memory of the late
Dr. J. W. Hope, who was R.M.O. at
Fremantle for very many years, and
very greatly loved by residents of the
port. The chair was given by Mrs.
Hope, who now '.ives in England, but is
at present on a visit to Australia.
The Hon. Lady Newdegate, accom-
panied by Mrs: Kerr Pearse, and at-
tended by Major Kerr Pearse, was pre-
sent at the Home of Peace ball, which
took place last Thursday evening at
Subiaco.
Miss Molly Fordham. B.Sc. of the
Biological Department of the Western
Australian University, hus received an
appointment as lecturer at. the Liver-
pool University, and left by the Themis-
tocles last Saturday.
Friends of the Rev. J. A. Howes, rec-
tor of Kelmscott and Armadale, will
bc glad to learn bc is making a good
recovery from his operation, and ex-
pects soon to leave hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. and Miss Beatty, who
have for some time been living in
Rheola-street, have given up their house
and gone into residence at Marsden,
Ord-street.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Parker arrived
in Perth last week ou a short visit.
Dr. Roberta Juli was a passenger by
the Themistocles for Englànd, where
she intends spending'about 12 months.
News comes from England of Mr.
and Mrs. A. G. Leeds, who are at pre-
sent in Essex. Mrs. Leeds's many
friends will be glad to learn that her
eyesight, which she partially lost, for a
time, is being gradually regained.
Mrs. Humphrey, of North Fremantle,
and her family, arc spending a fortnight
nt Northam.
During her visit to Adelaide. Mrs. G.
Parker, president of the, St. George's
Nursing Ambulance Division, was enter-
tained by his Excellency the Governor
and Lady Weigall at Government House.
Mr. and Mrs. F. Hadley, of St.
Georare's-terrace, are passengers by the
R.M.S. Narkuuda, which left Marseilles
last week for Fremantle.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Andrew*", of Cot
tesloe, left last week on a holiday to
the Eastern States.
Mr. A. J. Leckie, Mus. Bac, left last
week for Adelaide, where he has been
asked to act as examiner for the Aus-
tralian Universities' musieal examina-
tions.
Dr. and Mrs. Ramsay and their
family, who have been spending the
past few months in New South Wales,
are returning this week to Western
Australia.
Mrs. Moseley and Mrs. Eduya Mose-
ley returned to Perth last week after
a long visit to friends in the Eastern
States.
Mrs. Zabel left by tho Themistocles
for South Africa, where she will spend
some time before continuing her jour-
ney to England.
Lady Lathlain and her family left Jest
week to spend a short holiday in York
Mrs. B. C. Shaw, of Keysbrook, is
on a visit to the fields, where she is
the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Bridgeford
at Boulder.
The engagement was announced last
week of Vera Ellen, eldst daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Baynes, of Spearwood, to
William John, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs.
Adams, of East Fremantle (late of
Spearwood).
Thc Universities of Iowa end
Wyoming have awarded the degree of
Doctor of Laws to Mrs. Carrie Chap-
man Catt, the president of thc Inter-
national Woman Suffrage Alliance.
Mr. and Mrs- Geoffrey Egg (nee Miss
Elsie Wigglesworth ) have bought a
house at Auxles-Baincs, where they
have been living since their marriage a
few months ago.
Mrs. Trethowan and Miss Kathleen
Trethowan left by the Themistocles for
Paris, where Miss Trethowan intends
continuing her art studies.
Miss Mina Vincent, who has been in
Perth during the last few weeks, left
by Wednesday evening's train for Adc
hiids, where she intends spending two
or three weeks with friends en route
to Melbourne, where she bas taken a
flat, and intends to reside in future.

Perth, left last week on a visit to

Miss Hilary Rolls has returned to
Perth from a visit to Mrs. H. M.

ley, is ou a visit to Perth.
Mrs. Eric Riley, of Moora, is on a
visit to Osborne, where she is the guest
of Mrs, and Miss lodge.
_Mr. and Mrs. Young, 'of Claremont,
with their family, are holidaying in thc
hills.
Mrs. Bob Clifton, of Brunswick, is
spending a short visit with friends in
Perth next week.
Mrs. Edwin Rose, of Bury Hill, Bun-
bury, is on a visit to friends in Perth.
Lady Wollaston, widow of Sir Henry
Wollaston, late Comptroller of Cus-
toms in Victoria, was a passenger to
Entfand by the Themisto/eJcs, which
passed through Fremantle last Sunday.
Miss Buxton gave nn interesting lec-
ture on her travels in Southern Italy
to a large audience in Trinity lecture
hall Inst Thursday evening. Miss Bux-
ton's lecture was illustrated by lantern
slides showing photographs of the vari-
ous scenes of interest, mostly taken by
herself with her own camera.
Mr. Alec McNeil, who for many years
has been managing director of Millars'
was tendered a civic farewell last Thurs
day in Perth. Mr. and Mrs. Alec McN'eil
left by thc Themistocles for England.
Mrs. Val. Abbot, of Mount-street, in-
tends leaving shortly on a visit to her
motlier, Mrs. Marmion, and friends in
England.
Thc Right Rev. Bishop Trower. Bishop
of the Nor'-West arrived by thc
Charon last week, and left by boat last
Saturday for Sydney to attend the Con-
ference and General Synod.
From London comes news of Madame
Elsa Stralia, the soprano vocalist, who
has been appearing with great success
in opera nt Covent Garden for some
years, going to New York for the Oc-
tober season in the Metropolitan Opera
House. Madame Stralia is an Austra-
lian, a native of Adelaide, and is thc
daughter of Mr. Hugo Fischer, who was
for many years secretary of the Ade-
laide Liedertafel.
The engagement is aunounced of Essie,
youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.
W. Boehm, Bunbury, to Robert W.
Phillips, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H.
Phillips, Bunbury, late of Kalgoorlie.
Mr. H. Gregory, M.H.R., accompanied
by Mrs. and Miss Gregory, arrived in
Fremantle last week by the s.s. Charon. I
The committee of the Children's Hos-
pital has appointed Afr. A. AI. P. Alout
gonicry secretary of that institution.
Airs. Leonard Darlot, of Outram
street, West Perth, was among the pas-
sengers who left for England by thc

Aliss Esme Farquhar leaves this week
ou a health trip to Sydney, whore she
will be the guest of Airs. Frank Mar-
tin, formerly of Perth.
The Rev. T. and Airs. Caton, who
since their marriage a couple of weeks
ago have been touring the South-West,
arc returning to Perth this week»
A memorial window in memory of
the late Air. Francis Arnold Aioscley,
for so many years master of the Su-
preme Court, was unveiled last Sun-
day by the Rev. Robert Hanlin nt the
Presbyterian Church at Cottesloe. The
window represents "The Light of thc
World," Holman Hunt's beautfiul and
famous picture, and has been subscrib-
ed to by the late Air. Aroseley's fellow
church people, and also by many friends
and admirers in the community. A
brass tablet in memory of Mr. Edwyn
Aloseley, one of Air. Francis Aloseley's
sons, who made the supreme sacrifice
in the great war, was also unveiled by
the Rev. Harry Steele. The tablet has
been placed beneath the window in mem-
ory of their father, by his eons, in mem-
ory of their brother.
Aliss Alary Rae, of Claremont, who
has been on a long visit to the United
Kingdom, thc Continent, and America,
is returning to Australia by thc R.M.S.
Orvieto, which left London about a
fortnight ago.
