WAYS AND MEANS.
W~ have received the draft estimates
and probable expenditure for 1862. The
customs revenue is estimated nt .£ 117,000;
the inland revenue at £54,250 ; and the
contributions from the home Government
at £15,400; making a total of £186,650.
The establishments chargeable on the
general revenue cost £82,549; expenses
for the administration of justice, £2945;
rent, £280; transport, £2030; convey
ance of mails, £10,390 ; convict discipline,
£10,460; charitable allowances, £1800;
interest, £5604; miscellaneous, £3340;
and-credit it, ye over-taxed colonists !
pensions, £68654 17s. 3d.,-being £4254
17s.S3d. beyond the amount reserved by
law ! This gives aa grand total of
£126,252 18s. 9d. But to this must be
added the estimates ofilocal expenditure
-£32,063 Ils. 3d. for police, £9848 8s.
9d. for gaols, £15,556 17s. 6d. for
hospitals, £2200 for grants in aid of pub
lic institutions, £5187 :16s. d. for muni
cipalities, £600 for coroners' inquests,
£606 for the mnaintenance and transport of
paupers, and £12,000 for education;
making a total of £78,065 13s. lld. We
