AUSTRO.GERMAN ALLIANCE.
The German-Austrian secret treaty
alliance, which was negotiated in October,
1879, has been officially published in
Berlin and Buda-Pesth, for the purpose
of dispelling any doubts existing of its
character.
Its nature and object are purely defen
sive, and it provides that should Russia
attack either country, the allies are bound
to easist each other with their entire
military strength, and only conclude a
peace by their common agreement.
Should another power attackieither
country the other is bound to assume an
attitude of benevolent neutrality, unless
Russia supports the assailant.
It is understood that "another power"
alluded to refers to Franco; thus both
the European disturbers are checkmated.
The triple alliance treaty is precisely
similar in character, Italy being simply
admitted.
The publishing of these treaties is con
sidered to be a turning point in the
history of Europe, especially in relation
to the present situation.
LATEn.
