STANLEY.
On the afternoon of Tuesday last the
Stanley Recreation Ground was well
patronised to witness the Starling and
Magpie football teams. play the final
match of the season. These little clubs
hold no place in the ranks of regular
football, and were organised at the in
ception of the early closing movement
at Stanley, for the purpose of affording
healthy relaxation to employers and em
ployees. The object sought has been
most successfully attained, and the
players have contributed not a little to
the amusemient of the general public on
the afternoons of the weekly half-holi
days. The final match for the "premier
ship" had been deferred week after week,
owing to unfavourable weather, but the
long wait only invested the matter with
the more interest. Previous to engaging
in the "test match" three members from
each team tried, their speed of foot, the
prize being a silver cup presented by the
shop assistants of the township. The
Magpies were represented by Messrs.
Wyatt, House, and Lyall, and the Star
lings by Messrs. Sturgess, Hazelwood,
and F. Grubb. A well-contested race
resulted in a will for the Starlings, the
placed men being Sturgess, Wyatt,
Grubb, and Hazelwood, in the order
given. The winners followed the run
of luck, and secured the verdict in the
football match by 21 points, and the
honours attached.. to the premiership.
For the winning team the most promi
nent players were K. C. Laughton, C.
Archer, P. Borradale, Hazelwood, Ed
wards, Coreoran, and Frank Grubb, while
on the losing side Holmes, Cauthon,
Wyatt, House, and Ferguson exhibited
good play. As central umpire P. Kir
wan gave every satisfaction, the goal
umpires being M?essrs. KinIg and Collins.
