COUNCIL OF AGRICULT"rE.
"Rustic" writes:-"I read in your
issue of to-day (Friday), under the
heading of 'The Rural World,' a report
of a meeting of the Council of Agricul
ture, and the inference I can draw is
that it is a one-man show. I have
before written that I have failed to find
one single act of this department that
has benefited the section they represent,
or, to put it more plainly, I cannot find
that it has made one progressive step
during the whole of its existence. I
hail from a part where an institution,
whether Government or private. that
could not prove its utility would be im
mediately abolished, and that is what
should he done with the Council of
Agriculture of Tasmania. With regard
to the potato trials or tests yet to take
place. I am informed that it is decided
by Mfr. Nichols that a given number of
atsn are to be jlanted by each competl*
tor, number of sets only to be taken
into consideration, irrespective of weight.
Now, in the name of common sense,
where is the test? The proper, sure,
and only test is ratio of seed to yield.
I notice with regret that the experts
have been placed under the council. is
it sensible that this country can reason
ably expect the best efforts of an expert
when they are placed under a body of
laymen? What interest can they have in
their work? To state the naked truth,
they are placed under the control of in
dividuals they are supposed to teach.
More anon."
