PROGRESS OF THE STATE.
r , - November's Story.
The; ßeport of the Government Statis-
tician (Mr. S. Bennett) on the progress
nf thc State during the month of No-
vember, has been made available.
The population on November SO was
estimated to be as follows:-Males, 203,
' 165; females, 175,482; total, 378,637. On
the corrected figures* for October the in-
crease was 868. Arrivals by sea during
the month numbered 891 males and 631
females, while by rail the respective num-
bers were 811 and 367. Departures by
sea to the number of 632 males and 483
females were recorded, and by rail 764
males and 420 females.
j Vital Statistics.
! Births registered during the month
i numbered 6S5, being those of 367 male
land 318 female chUdien.'Per 1,000 of
"the mean population, this represented an
I annual birth-rate of 22.04. The deaths
? of 162 male and 87 female persons were
1 registered, or a total of 249, and the rate
was 8.01. The marriages registered
numbered 254, the rate being S.17.
Tn the metropolitan area the births of
161 male and 129 female children were
registered, or a total of 290. The rate
per 1,000 of tbe metropolitan population
was 19.67. The registrations included
0 male and 3 female illegitimates'. Of
the male births 31, and of the female
births 26, occurred in public institutions.
Twin born children to the number of 1
male and 5 female births were recorded.
The number of deaths registered was
184, being those of 81 male and 53 female
persons, and the rate was Ö.09. Of the
total deaths, 42 male and 15 female per-
sons took place in public institutions.
The deaths of 7 male and 5 female In-
fants were recorded, representing au in
fantile mortality rate of 42.10 deaths per
1,000 births.... There were ISO marriages
celebrated, representing a rate of 12.62.
Of these marriages, 139 were celebrated
by Tniuisters; while 47 were performed by
district registrar«.
Savings Bank.
During the five months ended November
30, the deposits lodged in the State 'Sav-
ings Bank amounted to £2,806,476, while
the withdrawals were £2,817,241. . The
accounts opened numbered 9,693, _ and
those closed 6,090, those remaining open
numbering 170,666, which represented ail
amount of £6,398,537 due to depositors,
or,£37.492 per account, Excluding interest I
except on accounts closed,)duiiug the

savings bank were;-Deposits, £18,593?
withdrawals, £12¡G95; accounts opened,
2,006; accounts closed, 1,516; accounts
remaining open, .47,798; amount due to
depositors, exclusive of interest as above,
£86,895, or £1.818 per account. Tin»
amount due to depositors in the combined
two banks averaged £17.128 per head ol
the population.
Gold Production.
Gold was produced during flic month'
lo the value of £136,810, representing
32,210 ounces, the value being exclusive
of premiums realised on export salee,.
No dividends were reported.
Land Settlement,
Conditional alienation of land toole
place during the month to the following
extent:-Conditional purchase, 29,831
acres; free homcetead farms, 0,149 acres;
grazing leases, 114,854 acres; selections
under Land Purchase Act, 12,311 acre»; "
town lots, 249 acres; total, 162.894 ncres.
Pastoral leases were registered for 933,
813 acres', and special leases for -70
acres making a total of 934.0S3 acres.
Supplementary October Figures.
The following progress figures are also
submitted to supplement those published
a month ago in respect of October:
The grosfe tonnage carried on Govern-
ment railways during the month wa«:
Goods, 211.447 tons; livestock, 10,168
' tons; departmental free freight, 40,570
tons; total, 262,191. tons.
' In thc metropolitan area the number
of registrations effected for motor cur*
was 291, taxi cabs , or cars 33, motor
'buses 3, motor waggons 113, and motor
cycles 175.
TTTe number of building permits granted
in the metropolitan area by local govern-
ing bodies was:-For new dwellings 15S,
valued at £114.067; and for other new
buildings 44, valued at £64,972, while foy
additions, etc., the number was 76, valued
at £12,889.
The quantity of butter produced in fac-
tories for the month amounted to 315,098
